Kraig Urbik Takes First Team Reps at LG

It looks like the Bills are making a change at left guard.

The Buffalo Bills started the season with Chris Williams at left guard. When Williams went to the IR with a back injury, Cyril Richardson, a 5th round pick in the 2014 draft, was given the job. The results have been disastrous.

Enter Kraig Urbik.

On Wednesday, Urbik took first team snaps at left guard. Doug Marrone said that Urbik "may" start on Sunday but that the team is looking at other options. Based on Buffalo's roster, Urbik is the best option to take over for Richardson.

Urbik has only played 55 snaps in 2014, entering in Week 3 when Williams went down with a back injury. He hasn't played since. Many Bills fans have wondered why Urbik hasn't at least rotated in at guard as he was the team's top guard in 2013.

Those fans have a right to wonder why he hasn't played. According to Pro Football Focus (Subscription Required), Buffalo's guard play has been horrendous. Currently, Williams is ranked 65th among all guards and Richardson is 75th. Erik Pears, the team's right guard, is 75th among all guards, dead last in the league.

In the last three seasons, the analytics site has graded Urbik as a top 25 guard. If Buffalo gets anything close to that production from Urbik their offensive line will benefit greatly.
