Bills Free Agent Shopping: Jets Edition

Bills Free Agent Shopping will look at every team in the NFL for free agents that could be fits with the Buffalo Bills. Starting in the AFC East, here are five New York Jets that Buffalo may target in free agency.

In free agency, the Buffalo Bills will explore all options to improve their roster. That includes looking at free agents on teams that disappointed in 2014. Rex Ryan’s former team, the New York Jets, finished 4-12 in 2014, but there are some players that Ryan may try to bring with him to Buffalo. Here is a look at five players the Bills could sign from the Jets.

5. David Harris

Inside linebacker may not actually be a need for the Bills. The team already has Preston Brown, Nigel Bradham and Kiko Alonso competing for two spots, but Harris has been linked to the Bills ever since Ryan got the head coaching job. If Harris is willing to take a reduced role and salary, he’d provide great depth for Buffalo. Harris, 31, is still strong in coverage. While the pairing makes sense, it most likely won’t happen as Harris will get more money elsewhere.

4. Michael Vick

This is more due to need than talent. Vick is 34 years old and on the downside of his career. While Vick still has the ability to run and scramble, he struggles as a passer. Yes, Vick has a big arm, but his accuracy is his biggest issue. Doug Whaley has said that the Bills plan on bringing in two quarterbacks to compete with E.J. Manuel, so Vick could be on Buffalo’s radar for that very reason.

3. John Conner

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Whaley also mentioned that the team plans on adding a fullback. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as Greg Roman utilized Bruce Miller with the San Francisco 49ers. Conner is a solid blocker who would come cheap. Conner is coming off of a bit of a down season, but he’s terrific in run blocking and decent in pass protection. There are better options available in free agency, but Conner wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize for the Bills.

2. Leger Douzable

The Bills need a defensive end and Douzable played well with limited snaps in New York. The defensive end had 25 tackles and 2.5 sacks while playing 242 snaps in 2014. Douzable’s lack of playing time was simply due to the talent in front of him. Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson, both outstanding players, are tough players to take off the field due to their high level of play. Douzable showed some pass rush ability in 2014 and could compete for snaps with the Bills in 2015.

1. Dawan Landry

Landry, 32, would be make the most sense for the Bills. The Bills seem hesitant to give Da’Norris Searcy a long-term contract extension. Searcy is coming off of the best season of his career, but he was only on the field for 666 snaps. Buffalo already gave out a large contract to Aaron Williams in 2014, so the team isn’t likely to invest even more money into the position. That leaves Duke Williams, Jonathan Meeks and Bacarri Rambo to compete for the strong safety job.

If the Bills look to bring in a free agent, Landry is the perfect fit. Despite his age, Landry is coming off of an outstanding season with New York. Landry is excellent in coverage and as a run defender, both areas where Searcy excelled in 2014. The only difference is that Landry saw 300 more snaps than Searcy. Landry’s age will prevent him from breaking the bank in free agency, and the Bills may be an attraction destination to Landry. He’d get to play for Ryan once again and join an extremely talented defense.
