Rex Ryan on Bills Offensive Additions

Rex Ryan sounded pretty excited about the Bills adding Charles Clay and Percy Harvin in free agency. The Bills head coach appeared on WGR Sportsradio 550 on Friday and discussed the two players, as well as the two new quarterbacks on the roster.

Rex Ryan is pretty excited about the offseason the Buffalo Bills are having, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Ryan appeared on WGR Sportsradio 550 on Friday to discuss the team's new additions. Here are some highlights from Ryan's interview.

Charles Clay

"This guy's a hard guy to defend. He's real multiple in what you can do with him," Ryan said. "He creates matchup problems. He's too fast for a linebacker. He's too big for a corner to cover. You gotta love that matchup with him. The thing also is he's a guy that's perfectly suited for what we're looking for, especially in Greg Roman's type of offense."

Ryan mentioned that Clay is a former tailback and the Bills could line him up as a fullback, a tight end, H-back and receiver. Clay is a player that Ryan believes the team can use in a variety of ways. There’s no doubt that Roman will find a variety of ways to utilize Clay in Buffalo.

Percy Harvin

Rex mentioned that he was always a big fan of Harvin and that the Jets would have drafted the dynamic playmaker if Mark Sanchez had been off the board in 2009 NFL draft. He also mentioned that Harvin was great last season when he joined the Jets.

“When he came out we did a lot of research on him,” said Ryan of Harvin. “Percy was the guy we were going to draft if it wasn’t Mark Sanchez. We spent like a week (at the University of Florida). So we knew everything about him. I was really comfortable with it. When we brought him in he was everything we thought he’d be. That was a great teammate and a super competitive guy and a great guy to be around.”

Ryan believes that Harvin will also play a big part in making life easier for Sammy Watkins.

"What we're trying to do is take a little pressure off Sammy Watkins as well. You might recall last year, Sammy got doubled almost every snap. You roll your coverage and all that,” Ryan said. “With Percy, that's going to be tough to do, because Percy can catch a slant and take it the distance. He can go over the top of you, all those types of things. He's a game breaker in the flexibility he gives you. Percy's one of those rare guys that you can put all over. You can put him in the backfield, you can run reverses with him, he's an outstanding kick returner.”

Matt Cassel

“He’s done some pretty good things in this league. He’s got that veteran presence about him.”

Tyrod Taylor

“He’s probably the fastest quarterback in the league. He’s explosive running the zone reads, and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Ryan also mentioned E.J. Manuel and Jeff Tuel in the interview. The coach confirmed that there will be an open competition for the starting job in training camp and the best man will start in Buffalo.
