Ryan Talks Bills at AFC Coaches' Breakfast

Rex Ryan met with the media for almost an hour and a half on Tuesday at the AFC coaches' breakfast. Ryan had plenty to say about Buffalo's offseason.

Rex Ryan met with the media at the AFC coaches’ breakfast on Tuesday. Ryan is in Arizona this week for the league’s annual NFL meetings. Below are some of the highlights of what Ryan shared in his meeting with the media.

The Pegulas

Ryan mentioned that Terry and Kim Pegula, owners of the Buffalo Bills, want to build a winner in Buffalo. Ryan noted that after being fired by the New York Jets, it was important for him to take the right job. He feels that the job in Buffalo is the position that was right for him moving forward.

LeSean McCoy/Kiko Alonso Trade

According to Ryan, the Bills coaching staff and higher-ups were stunned to find out that McCoy was on the trading block in Philadelphia. The trade itself took all of 30 minutes. Ryan noted that Alonso is a great player, but trading for McCoy was what was best for the Bills.

Ryan also mentioned that McCoy is “probably one of our top recruiters right now” to potential Bills players.

Bryce Brown

Ryan mentioned most of his running backs in a positive light. The only exception to this was running back Bryce Brown.

"With us, when we made the LeSean McCoy trade, with Fred Jackson and Boobie Dixon and, uh, the fast dude. Brown is it?" Ryan said, smiling. "I'm not gonna learn his name until he holds on to the football. And if he does, he'll have a chance to play. But until we feel comfortable with it, he won't."

Brown had 36 carries in 2014 and only fumbled the ball once. It was a very costly fumble as the running back was on his way into the end zone against the Kansas City Chiefs. In his NFL career, Brown has five fumbles in 226 carries.

Quarterback Competition

"There's not a clear-cut No. 1," Ryan said. "We're looking to develop EJ. There's no question.

"The quarterback just has to be part of the solution. He doesn't have to be the solution himself.”

Ryan noted that he “never saw a regression” in Manuel’s four games last season. The coach thought Manuel looked “pretty darn good” against the Dolphins.

Returning to MetLife Stadium

Ryan joked that Jets fans will give him a warm welcome when the Bills play the Jets at MetLife Stadium. “They’ll love me like everybody does,” Ryan stated. “No, they’ll boo me out of the stadium!”

Richie Incognito

When asked about offensive guard Richie Incognito, Ryan noted that no one is perfect and that the team feels good about the guard. Ryan added that the Bills “talked with a lot of people” before meeting with Incognito and that the team feels Incognito can be successful in Buffalo.

New England Patriots

"There's parity in the league from top to bottom," Ryan said. "However, when you look at the division, there's no parity. You're dealing with probably the best team in there. So it's hard to win your division.”

Ryan added, "We're coming after them. So let's see what happens."
