Bills Owner OK with NFL Franchise in Toronto

If the NFL ever gives Toronto their own team, the Buffalo Bills and Terry Pegula are on board with the idea.

There was a time when Buffalo Bills fans worried about their beloved team moving to Toronto. Those worries were relieved when Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the Bills. Buffalo will have an NFL franchise for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean Toronto can’t have a team of their own.

At the NFL’s annual meetings, John Kryk of the Toronto Sun interviewed Terry Pegula about Toronto getting their own NFL franchise.

“I don’t think I would have a problem with it if they could support the team,” Pegula said. “It’s a big enough market. I don’t know how that works with the CFL, though.”

Pegula mentioned that he was asked by the league about Toronto getting their own team when he was approved as owner.

“I said I would support it if Toronto had a franchise ... There are a lot of people there.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held a press conference at the league’s annual meetings and Toronto was brought up in the conversation. The full question and answer can be seen below.

When Terry and Kim Pegula bought the Bills, most people thought there was no chance of getting an NFL franchise in Toronto. But Terry told me he would not stand in the way of an NFL franchise in the city. Obviously with L.A. on the front burner, where does the league stand on Toronto long term?

Goodell: We haven’t had much focus on it. Terry is exactly right. It was asked during the process when he met with the finance committee and he gave the exact answer he told you. He doesn’t see that as an issue for him. His focus is on Buffalo. Creating a solution and a franchise there long term that represents that region. He is incredibly focused on that and not concerned about Toronto. We continue our international developments. We spent a lot of time in the meeting talking about our global opportunities here. Toronto is an important market. But all of Canada is, as well as Mexico and the globe. We are aggressively marketing ourselves on a global basis.

Based upon Goodell’s response, Toronto getting an NFL franchise isn’t high on the league’s priority list right now. If that changes, Pegula and the Bills appear to have no issues with a Toronto franchise.
