Rex Ryan will Try to Set the Colts Up

When Rex Ryan took over as head coach of the New York Jets in 2009, he believed he 'set up' the Houston Texans in Week 1. In 2015, look for Ryan to use the same strategy when he and the Bills face off with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Buffalo Bills will face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 of the 2015 season. It won’t be an easy matchup for the Bills, but the team will have one advantage: lack of footage.

Buffalo enters the season with new coaches, so Indianapolis cannot view footage from last season to get an idea of what the Bills like to do. The team also has an influx of new talent on offense so the Colts won’t have any idea how the Bills will utilize players like LeSean McCoy, Percy Harvin and Charles Clay.

As for the preseason, don’t expect Rex Ryan to show anything during the team’s four games. In his 2011 book, Play Like You Mean It: Passion, Laughs, and Leadership in the World’s Most Beautiful Game, Ryan described his first game as coach of the New York Jets. The team faced off against the Houston Texans and Ryan explained his confidence heading into the game.

“I knew we would win. I set the Texans up. Everything I ran in the preseason on defense I changed. I never ran one thing in the preseason that would get them ready to play us. I couldn’t give two sh--- about the preseason. I will set up an opponent in a New York minute. Because it works. They had no idea how to read us or prepare for anything we brought.”

It’s a pretty safe bet that Buffalo will run a vanilla offense and defense this preseason based on Ryan’s comments. The Bills will hope that the element of surprise will work in their favor as they try to defeat  Andrew Luck and the Colts.
