Bills Name Bill Walsh Coaching Interns

Buffalo's 2015 Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship participants were named on Tuesday.

The Buffalo Bills announced their 2015 Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship participants. The group consists of Andre Reed, Chris McAlister, Travis Bush, Gabe Franklin, Ernie Gutierrez, Kenechi Udeze and Elvis Joseph. Here’s a brief look at each of the participants.

Andre Reed (Bills 1985-1999, Washington Redskins 2000)

Bills fans are certainly familiar with Reed. The wide receiver spent 15 seasons with Buffalo and finished his career with 951 receptions, 13,198 receiving yards and 87 touchdowns. Reed is Buffalo’s all-time leader in each of the three aforementioned categories.

In Buffalo, Reed played a large role in helping the Bills get to four consecutive Super Bowls. He was also named to seven Pro Bowl teams (1988-1994) in his career and was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Reed will work with Buffalo’s wide receivers.

Chris McAlister (Baltimore Ravens 1999-2008, New Orleans Saints 2009)

McAlister was the tenth overall pick of the 1999 NFL draft. Much like Reed, McAlister spent the majority of his career with one team. In his second season in the NFL, McAlister won a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens by defeating the New York Giants.

In Baltimore, McAlister was named to three Pro Bowls (2003, 2004, 2006) and was a two-time All-Pro (2003-2004). McAlister finished his career in New Orleans and was released a few months before the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV. He finished his career with 431 tackles, 26 interceptions and five touchdowns.

This will be the second consecutive year that McAlister has worked with Buffalo’s defensive backs.

Travis Bush

Bush played wide receiver in college at Texas State. Since 2000, Bush has coached at the high school and college level. Bush is currently the University of Houston’s Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. He’ll work with Buffalo’s running backs.

Gabe Franklin

Franklin spent his college career at Boise State from 2001-2004. At Boise State, Franklin registered 72 passes defended which made him the NCAA’s career leader in the category. Franklin went undrafted but spent time with the Chargers, Giants and 49ers. He also played one season with in NFL Europe with the Cologne Centurions.

Franklin currently serves as UTEP’s Defensive Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator and will work with the Bills’ defensive backs.

Ernie Gutierrez

Gutierrez is an assistant football coach at La Mirada High School. He’ll work with Buffalo’s special teams unit.

Kenechi Udeze (Minnesota Vikings 2004-2007)

Udeze finished his four-year career with 117 tackles, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles in Minnesota. Currently, Udeze is the Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at USC, his alma mater.

Udeze will work with Buffalo’s defensive linemen.

Elvis Joseph (Jacksonville Jaguars 2001-2003)

Joseph spent three seasons in the NFL and in his career, Joseph had 68 carries for 294 yards (4.3 YPC) as well as 18 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Joseph is currently the Senior Associate Head Coach/Running Backs Coach at Southern University, his alma mater. He will work with the Bills’ tight ends.

Elvis (and the rest of the participants) will leave the building after the team’s mandatory minicamp and training camp at St. John Fisher College.
