Rex Ryan envisions Bills carrying 3 QBs

Tyrod Taylor, Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel are all competing for the starting quarterback job. Regardless of the outcome, Rex Ryan sees the Bills carrying all three quarterbacks this season.

There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Bills will only carry two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. The speculation has added a new element to the quarterback competition. Not only would one quarterback be winning a starting job, but one could possibly be released or traded. Even E.J. Manuel recently acknowledged his uncertain future when he said his play would take care of things either here (Buffalo) or ‘somewhere else.’

Despite the speculation and Manuel’s comment, Bills head coach Rex Ryan believes the team will end up carrying three quarterbacks. In his first episode of Coffee with the Coach, Ryan said the following on his final 53-man roster.

“We’re going to keep 53 really good players and I have a funny feeling that means three quarterbacks.”

Keeping all three quarterbacks is not a bad idea. Matt Cassel has only played in 15 games or more in a season three times (2008-2010) in his career and EJ Manuel suffered a few injuries in his rookie season. Last, running quarterbacks are likely to take some shots over the course of the season, which can lead to injuries. Tyrod Taylor may be durable enough to last a 16 game season, but no one knows for sure. Carrying all three quarterbacks makes sense for the Bills.
