Rex Ryan: 'We can't make a field goal'

Dan Carpenter has been accurate and clutch for the Bills in his first two seasons with the Bills. This preseason, Carpenter only made 50 percent of his field goal attempts and Rex Ryan isn't happy about it.

Earlier this week, Rex Ryan said he was concerned with Dan Carpenter’s missed kicks in the preseason. Tonight, Ryan really laid into the Buffalo Bills kicker after Buffalo’s 17-10 loss to the Lions in the preseason finale.

“Certainly we’ve got some issues, hell we can’t make a field goal so we better be looking for any guy who has ever kicked a football in his life. They will get an opportunity here,” said Ryan. “I’m tired of seeing us miss a field goal. We’ve got a kickoff guy and we miss field goals. I don’t get it. We’ll certainly be looking out there. I don’t know if anybody is out there, but nobody gets this job by default, and certainly you’ve got to earn your way out here. Very disappointed in that and I don’t care who knows it.”

Carpenter missed a 40 yard field goal in the second half of tonight’s game that hit the right upright. That was after the kicker made a 43 yard field goal and connected on an extra point in the first half. Carpenter finished the preseason 3-of-6 on field goal attempts this preseason and the kicker also missed one extra point.

In his first two seasons in Buffalo, Carpenter has been very consistent for the Bills. He’s made 67 of 74 field goal attempts and only missed one extra point attempt during his time with the Bills. After his first season in Buffalo, the Bills signed Carpenter to a four-year, $9.95 million contract in March of 2014.

Ryan claims that the Bills will be looking for other kickers. It will be interesting to see if Buffalo brings anyone in to compete against Carpenter so close to the start of the season.
