Rex Ryan didn't say many surprising things on Monday at the Buffalo Bills end of season meeting with the media. However, when he was asked about defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman, Ryan didn't guarantee that he'd return in 2016.
Ryan noted that he wouldn't answer questions about any member of his staff until evaluations were complete. Buffalo's defense did not meet expectations in 2015 after finishing the previous season as a top five unit. This year, the defense finished 15th in points allowed (22.4), 16th in rush yards allowed (108.1) and 19th in both passing yards allowed (248.2) and overall yards allowed (356.4).
While Thurman is Buffalo's defensive coordinator in title, he may not deserve the blame for the team's defensive performance. As Mark Ludwiczak of Bills Digest noted, the defense is "100 percent Rex Ryan's defense."
There was no timeframe given in regards to the completion of coaching evaluations but Ryan will likely have to address any coaching changes in the near future.
