Buffalo Bills 53rd overall picks, 53 days from the 2016 NFL draft

Peerless Price headlines the list of former Bills 53rd overall picks.

The 2016 NFL draft is 53 days away. Who have the Buffalo Bills drafted at pick 53?

Buffalo has drafted five players at pick 53. Here’s a look at the former Bills players.

Peerless Price, WR, Tennessee (1999)

Price had two stints with the Bills, but his first stay in Buffalo showed his big play ability. In his first four years in Buffalo, Price averaged 12.7, 14.7, 16.3, and 13.3 yards per reception. He also saw his receptions and yards rise each year over his four seasons in Buffalo.

In his final year with the Bills, Price exploded statistically with Drew Bledsoe at quarterback. This was their only season together after Price was traded in the offseason. The wide receiver had been franchised by the Bills but the team felt they couldn’t sign Price to a long-term deal. The receiver was dealt to the Atlanta Falcons for a first round draft pick. Price signed a seven year, $42 million contract in Atlanta. Buffalo used the first round pick to select Willis McGahee.

In Atlanta, Price never came close to his 2002 stats with the Bills. He caught 64 passes for 838 yards and three touchdowns in his first season in Atlanta and only caught 45 passes for 575 yards and three touchdowns in his second season. Price and QB Michael Vick struggled to find the chemistry that Price had in Buffalo with Bledsoe.

Price’s next landing spot was with the Cowboys. He was reunited with Bledsoe in Dallas but they didn’t exactly pick up where they left off. In seven games, one start, Price caught six passes for 96 yards.

The receiver finished his career by rejoining the Bills. In his first year back, Price caught 49 passes for 402 yards and three touchdowns. He caught a 15 yard touchdown pass from J.P. Losman with nine seconds remaining to defeat the Houston Texans 24-21 that season. Price returned in 2007 but he only had 68 yards receiving on seven receptions in four games. The receiver’s season ended in 2007 due to a neck injury.

You have to wonder what would have happened with Price if he had stayed with the Bills.

Gabe Northern, LB, LSU (1996)

Northern played in 64 games over his four seasons with the Bills and started in 35 games. During his time with the Bills, Northern recorded 110 combined tackles, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and two defensive touchdowns.

Northern left the Bills in 2000 to play with the Minnesota Vikings. He played in Minnesota for one season and recorded eight tackles in nine games.

Northern still attends Bills games and certain events in the area.

Fred Swendsen, DE, Notre Dame (1972)

Swendsen spent the preseason with the Bills in 1972 but was released for medical reasons. He never recorded any stats in the NFL. Today, Swendsen is a chiropractor in Washington.

Bruce Jarvis, C, Washington (1971)

Jarvis played at center for four seasons with the Bills. Knee injuries shortened his career but he was an original member of The Electric Company, a group of linemen who opened up running lanes for O.J. Simpson.

In a “Where Are They Now?” feature from back in 2008, Jarvis was living on an 80 acre farm with family members.

Julian Nunamaker, DE, Tennessee-Martin (1969)

Nunamaker spent two seasons with the Bills. He played in 18 games over this time and had one career start. Nunamaker passed away in 1995 at the age of 49. The University of Tennessee at Martin has a memorial scholarship in Nunamaker’s name that is given to a walk-on player.
