The 2016 NFL draft is 42 days away. Who have the Buffalo Bills drafted at pick 42?
Buffalo has drafted five players at pick 42. Here’s a look at the former Bills players.
Jairus Byrd, S, Oregon (2009)
Byrd spent five seasons and played like one of the best safeties in the league during his tenure in Buffalo. In his five seasons with the Bills, Byrd made the Pro Bowl three times (2009, 2012, 2013). As a rookie, Byrd had nine interceptions.
In five seasons, Byrd started in 66 games with Buffalo and recorded 22 interceptions, 33 passes defensed, 11 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, three sacks, 352 total tackles, and two touchdowns.
After playing very well with the Bills, Byrd left in free agency and signed a six-year, $56 million contract with the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans felt that Byrd’s play making ability would help their defensive but he has not come close to playing up to his contract due to injuries. In two seasons, Byrd has played in 17 games and registered 16 starts. He’s registered 75 total tackles, one interception, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one sack.
Carwell Gardner, FB, Louisville (1990)
Gardner appeared on all four Super Bowl Bills teams in his career. The fullback played for Buffalo from 1990-1995. In Buffalo, Gardner had 25 starts in 83 games played. He rushed the ball 178 times for 621 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 27 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown during his Bills career.
After his career in Buffalo came to an end, Gardner spent one season with the Ravens and one season with the Chargers.
While appearing in four Super Bowls is certainly Gardner’s biggest accomplishment, he also caught the first regular season pass in Baltimore Ravens history.
Chris Burkett, WR, Jackson St. (1985)
Burkett spent four full seasons with the Bills and part of a fifth before he moved on to the New York Jets. In Buffalo, Burkett had 33 starts in 55 games and caught 137 passes for 2,288 yards and nine touchdowns.
With the Jets, Burkett played in 76 games (29 starts). He caught 155 passes in New York for 2,064 yards and 10 touchdown. Burkett was named the Jets MVP in 1991.
During his time in Buffalo, Burkett had a Starting Lineup figurine produced. It’s one of the hardest to find today.
Currently, Burkett is the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi.
Bob Nelson, LB, Nebraska (1975)
Nelson played in the NFL until 1984, but his time with the Bills only lasted two seasons. He played in 25 games with the Bills before joining the 49ers in 1979. During his season in San Francisco, Nelson played in one game. His final stop in the NFL was with the Raiders. Nelson played for the Raiders in 1980 and 1982-1984. The linebacker recorded 4.5 sacks with the Raiders.
Jim LeMoine, TE/G, Utah St. (1967)
LeMoine’s professional career lasted three seasons. He spent one year with the Bills and two years with the Houston Oilers.
