The Buffalo Bills announced that Bruce Smith's No. 78 would be retired at their home opener against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football.
Smith joins fellow Hall of Fame teammate Jim Kelly as the only Bills players to have their numbers retired by the team. Although that is currently the case, is Thurman Thomas next in line? It seems that way based upon Russ Brandon's comments to WGR-550. The Bills team president said the following on Wednesday morning in regards to Thomas' No. 34 possibly being retired:
“Stay tuned,”Brandon told WGR-550. “Today we’re celebrating Bruce, but obviously everyone knows Thurman’s place and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with that number down the road, but you can read between the lines.”
Reading between the lines clearly indicates that Buffalo has had discussions about retiring Thomas' number at some point as well. It may not happen in 2016, but it's clear that No. 34 will be retired in the near future along with No. 12 and No. 78.
