2016 Buffalo Bills Captain Options on a Week to Week basis

O Captain! My Captain!

Rex Ryan rotates his captains on a week-to-week basis. Generally, his captains include multiple players who at one point played on the team the Buffalo Bills are playing against.

Keeping this in mind, Buffalo Football Report is looking at the Bills 2016 schedule and listing players who may be selected as a captain based upon a previous stint with the opposition (including preseason/off-season/practice squad roster spots). The Bills currently have 90 players on their roster and some are long-shots to make Buffalo's final 53-man roster, but for now we're listing all possible options.

Week 1 at Baltimore Ravens

Former Ravens: Tyrod Taylor, Corey Graham, Lorenzo Alexander, Sammy Seamster

Notes: Taylor and Graham should both make Buffalo’s 53-man roster and both are likely to be captains. Alexander has a great shot of making the team for his special teams play and he may get the nod as a captain as well. Seamster is a long-shot to make the team.

Week 2 vs. New York Jets (TNF)

Former Jets: Greg Salas, T.J. Barnes, Javier Arenas, Dan Carpenter, I.K. Enemkpali, Walter Powell, Dri Archer

Notes: Enemkpali and Powell were both captains for Buffalo last year versus the Jets, but there’s a chance that neither player makes the team this season.

Salas played well for Buffalo in the season finale versus the Jets and if he makes the 53-man roster, the wide receiver will most likely be a captain. Carpenter wasn’t a captain for Buffalo last year against the Jets so he may not be selected here but he spent some time with the Jets. T.J. Barnes may make the team as a nose tackle and his stint with the Jets makes him a candidate for captain.

Arenas and Archer are far from sure things to make the roster, but with previous stints with the Jets, both could be a captain if they make the team.

Week 3 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Former Cardinals: Corey White, Lorenzo Alexander, Javier Arenas, Dan Carpenter, Jim Dray, Mike Gillislee, Walter Powell

Notes: White, Arenas, and Powell aren’t sure thing in regards to making the roster, but Alexander and Dray are very likely to represent the Bills in this matchup.

Week 4 at New England Patriots

Former Patriots: Ryan Groy, Greg Salas, Leonard Hankerson, Sterling Moore, Jerel Worthy

Notes: Worthy's odds of making 53-man roster. are against him The other four players all have legitimate shots and may represent the Bills in this game.

Week 5 at Los Angeles Rams

Former Rams: Kevin Reddick, Greg Salas

Notes: Salas began his career with the Rams. Reddick also spent time with the Rams and if he makes the team, he may represent Buffalo.

Week 6 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Former 49ers: Manny Lawson, Colton Schmidt

Notes: Lawson and Schmidt should both make the 53-man roster and both should represent Buffalo in this contest.

Week 7 at Miami Dolphins

Former Dolphins: Dan Carpenter, Charles Clay, Jonathan Dowling, Mike Gillislee, Richie Incognito, Sammy Seamster, Phillip Thomas

Notes: So many former Fins… Dowling, Seamster, and Thomas face long odds of making the roster but the other players will likely represent Buffalo.

Week 8 vs. New England Patriots

Former Patriots: Ryan Groy, Greg Salas, Leonard Hankerson, Sterling Moore, Jerel Worthy

Week 9 at Seattle Seahawks (Monday Night Football)

There are no former Seahawks on the roster.

Week 10: BYE WEEK

Week 11 at Cincinnati Bengals

Former Bengals: Manny Lawson, Greg Little, James Wilder, Jr.

Notes: Lawson could be a surprise cap casualty, but that’s highly doubtful. He’s certainly the likeliest option to make the 53-man roster among this trio.

Week 12 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Former Jaguars: T.J. Barnes, Jarrett Boykin

Notes: Neither are locks for the roster, but Barnes looks like an ideal nose tackle. Boykin has previous experience with Tyrod Taylor and if he makes the roster, he’s a captain for this game.

Week 13 at Oakland Raiders

Former Raiders: Greg Little, Lorenzo Alexander, Jonathan Dowling, Lavar Edwards, Sterling Moore, Walter Powell, Max Valles

Notes: Alexander and Moore face the best odds of making the roster among this group but all of the players above have spent time with Oakland.

Week 14 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Former Steelers: Fernando Velasco, Corbin Bryant, Dri Archer

Notes: The first two players should make the roster with Buffalo. Archer has a shot as a kick returner.

Week 15 vs. Cleveland Browns

Former Browns: Greg Little, Jim Dray, Colton Schmidt

Notes: Dray is a lock to represent the Bills as a captain in this matchup. Schmidt would also be a good choice.

Week 16 vs. Miami Dolphins

Former Dolphins: Dan Carpenter, Charles Clay, Jonathan Dowling, Mike Gillislee, Richie Incognito, Sammy Seamster, Phillip Thomas

Week 17 at New York Jets

Former Jets: Greg Salas, T.J. Barnes, Javier Arenas, Dan Carpenter, I.K. Enemkpali, Walter Powell
