Williams officially out as coach

The Bills held a press conference today to announce that Gregg Williams is no longer the coach of the Buffalo Bills, ending his three year stint with a 17-31 overall record, 6-10 this season. This comes as no surprise, it has been all but expected and the upcoming announcement was reported on Bills Report Saturday morning. Bills GM Tom Donahoe stated he informed Williams of the decision this morning.

Donahoe stated the obvious when saying that the Bills have regressed this season, giving this as the reason why Williams' contract will not be renewed.

Donahoe had nothing but kind words for the departing Williams and right from the opening statement showed his support for the former coach.

"Gregg came here under very difficult circumstances and handled things with great class and great dignity all the way through some very difficult times." Donahoe said, "I would also like to apologize to Gregg. I think some of the personal criticisms that were leveled at him were unfair."

Williams, along with Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride, were widely criticized on this site and elsewhere for their mis-management of the Bills offense. Donahoe acknowledged that contrbituted to his decision to let Williams go.

Gilbride, as well as the rest of the staff, remain under contract and still with the team. It will be the new coach's decision on who to let go from the staff.

As far as potential coaching candidates Donahoe gave no indication on who they are looking at, saying only that "everbody is potentially on that list". But he assured fans that owner Ralph Wilson is prepared to pay what it takes to get the right guy in Buffalo, be it a big name coach or not.

Donahoe, Wilson, and assistant general manager Tom Modrak will meet tonight to begin working on the interview list. Our sources say that additional discussions will take place in Wilson's Florida home later this week.

On the short list of candidates in the rumor department are recently fired coach Jim Fassel and Saints coach Jim Haslett. We'll keep you posted as soon as a more definite picture of the coaching candidates becomes clear.
