Donahoe to interview Fassel tomorrow

League sources tell us that former Giants coach Jim Fassel has quickly become Bills GM Tom Donahoe's number one choice. Fassel is scheduled to interview with the Bills tomorrow. <P> Donahoe believes that Fassel could be an extremely positive influence on the organization, especially with his offensive knowledge and scheme, which plays to the strengths of many players on the Bills roster. The truth about the Bears interview with Fassel and more on Jim Haslett is inside.

Contrary to reported stories on Chicago radio and the Chicago Sun Times, Bears GM Jerry Angelo did not cancel a scheduled interview with Fassel because he was already in serious negotiations with the Bills.

The Bears interview with Angelo was canceled more due to logistics than anything. Angelo is currently in San Francisco to interview Jim Mora, then will fly back east later in the week to interview more candidates. Therefore, his Fassel interview would have to be delayed until next week, by which time Angelo was under the impression Fassel would already have a deal in place with another team.

Angelo could have assumed that team would be the Bills. The Bills and Fassel as well as representatives have had some discussions, but nothing fringing on offering him the Buffalo job.

The wild-card in the Bills coaching situation could be local man Jim Haslett, currently head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Our sources say that Haslett would like to leave New Orleans and become the head coach of the Bills. The problem right now is New Orleans owner Tom Benson will not release Haslett and has not appeared interested in negotiating a deal to secure Haslett's services, for a draft selection or player(s).

The often mentioned "escape clause" in Haslett's contract with the Saints that would allow him to leave if offered the Buffalo job never actually existed. So Benson would have to let Haslett go for him to enter the field of Bills coaching candidates.

Stay with Bills Report tomorrow and this week for continuing updates on the coaching situation as they become available to us.
