Battlin' Bills

In this week's Battlin' Bills segment we focus in on the starter at Left Defensive End. The battle appears to be between returning starter Ryan Denney and second year player Chris Kelsay.

Returning starter Ryan Denney offers size at 6'7" 276# but has yet to prove to being a dominate starter. Denney joined the team as a second round pick in 2002. Infact the Bills traded up (exchanging their 3rd and 4th round picks with the 49ers) in the draft to take him sixty first overall. Denney got very little playing time as rookie. He started all of last year and was solid but far from spectacular though by season's end he showed some good skills, notching a sack in each of the team's last two games, against division foes Miami and New England. Ironically enough he was compared to former Bills Left End Phil Hansen coming out of the draft, Denney can be best described as a strong tackling up the field type defensive end. In that he isn't the best pass rusher in the world but can get the job done at times but best suited at making tackles. One other negative is that he is a bit older then you would expect from a third year pro because of his two years serving the church before attending BYU.

The other combatant in this battle is Chris Kelsay. Like Denney, Kelsay was a second round draft selection of the Bills, selected 48th overall in the 2003 draft. At 6'4" 275# Kelsay isn't as big as his competitor, he is considered the better pure pass rusher. Of course Kelsay didn't show any of that as a rookie as he failed to register a sack in 16 games played. The Bills brought both Denney and Kelsay slowly rookies so one would expect better production out of Kelsay this year. If he proves to be another Grant Wistrom (the player he was compared to coming out of the draft) he should very easily over take Denney for this job.

We think Denney with his experience will ultimately win this battle. Though don't be surprised if Kelsay spells him early and often if the Bills wanted to generate a bigger pass rush.
