Cowart a Jet?

Inside sources say the Jets are interested in signing Sam Cowart and reuniting the star linebacker with Ted Cottrell. What's interesting about this is that New York just re-signed fellow FSU alum Marvin Jones for middle linebacker. Cowart would presumably play weakside linebacker, where he played in college.

Of course, Cowart balked at playing weakside linebacker when Gregg Williams wanted to move him there last off-season. Cowart probably wouldn't have a problem with it now, but he did back then because it was his contract year and he worried that he might not play well, which he thought would negatively impact his chances at a lucrative free agent contract.

Cowart and Jones never played together at FSU. The Jets drafted Jones in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Cowart was a freshman in the fall.

With Cowart on the weakside, Jones in the middle and Mo Lewis on the strongside, the Jets would improve what was already one of the top-10 starting linebacking units in the league, which included James Farrior on the weakside. Farrior, however, is an unrestricted free agent.
