Can't believe the new uniforms weren't ready

There was speculation that the Bills would unveil their new uniforms when Drew Bledsoe came to town this afternoon. It certainly missed a great marketing opportunity. ESPNews covered the event live, as well as Empire Sports Network.

Unfortunately, the organization did not have a jersey ready in time. Not even a quick mock-up. When the team finally shows the uniforms publicly – expected to be sometime in May – it probably won't have the nationwide audience it had today. Surely, the Bills must have lost a few sales on that one …

Ralph Wilson joked that he was lucky with two No. 11s in a row at quarterback. I have to think he was unlucky considering he gave up the No. 9 overall pick in February 1998 for Johnson. In retrospect, that was way, way too high a price to pay for someone who hadn't played that much. Certainly, Johnson had unforeseen potential at that point, but the Jaguars must have thought John Butler and his staff were crazy for not only relinquishing the No. 9, but also giving them a fourth-rounder too. I guess that was a case of Butler's eyes being bigger than his stomach.

The Bledsoe deal, by comparison, is a bargain. He has nine years of playing experience. And on top of that, to think Buffalo gave up just a first-round pick – in next year's draft – to get him. That was a risk worth taking …

Bledsoe's agent is David Dunn, who is also Mike Williams' agent. Dunn accompanied Bledsoe to town today. Perhaps, he and Tom Donahoe are holding preliminary contract talks. Certainly, it would behoove Dunn to get Williams done quickly – not only because Dunn will grab a nice commission for it, but because Williams will be protecting the health of Dunn's longtime client, Bledsoe …

Ex-Bill Ken Irvin joined the New Orleans Saints on a one-year deal. Irvin said he was not going to retire after last season. He will have a tough battle to win a job with the Saints. New Orleans likes to attack and relies on its DBs to single cover. That's not Irvin's strength.
