Ostroski missed, but is replaceable

Everyone's been reporting that the Bills cut down to 65 players yesterday. But a quick count of the roster will show that the Bills really have 66 on the roster. They have one roster exemption because middle linebacker Jimmy Robinson was an NFL European last spring.

And if you've been reading Shout! Hot News over the past month, you would have noticed that we were among the first media outlets to indicate that Jerry Ostroski probably wouldn't be playing for the Bills any time soon. As it turns out, we were right.

So how much of a loss is Ostroski as compared to new right guard Marques Sullivan? Well, seeing that Hot Ostroski's mobility would have been limited had he played, the Bills are better off with Sullivan. He just doesn't have the experience yet …

I don't care that the Bills have lost three preseason games, but I am concerned that the front-four cannot do anything against an offensive line. Gregg Williams came in here last season and said that the team was going to defend the run with numbers. With this line, even with Chidi Ahanotu and Shawn Price (who was noticeably limping during the Indy game – he's certainly not in any shape to play five NFL games, let alone 16), the Bills are definitely going to need eight, maybe even nine in the box to stop the run. It's terrible …

Antoine Winfield, in the current issue of Shout! says that if the team doesn't get a pass rush going, fans should be ready for a long, long season …

Sheldon Jackson looks like he may have played himself onto the roster, beating out long snapper/tight end Dan O'Leary. The fourth-year tight end has come on in training camp and is looking more sure of himself in the passing game. Only free agent Brady McDonnell is left to beat out. Jackson is a good special teams contributor and a good blocker. Now it looks like he can catch passes too. We'll see during the final exhibition game Thursday night at Detroit.
