Let's Review: Position-by-position look

Cuts came and went without much fanfare in WNY, as local linebacker Jon Corto (left) was a pleasant surprise. Here's a position-by-position look at what the current team...

Review of final 53-man roster

Here's a position-by-position breakdown of the Bills' final 2008 roster:

Quarterbacks (3)

Who they kept: Trent Edwards, JP Losman, Gibran Hamdan

Who they cut: Matt Baker (placed on injured/waived list)

Analysis: This was really a no-brainer. The QB situation has been pretty solid for quite some time. Hamdan had more experience than Baker, and Baker's injury didn't help him any either.

Running Backs (4)

Who they kept: Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, Darian Barnes, Xavier Omon

Who they cut: Jonathan Evans, Bruce Hall, Dwayne Wright

Analysis: The only real, slightly more difficult decision here was between keeping Omon or Wright. Wright had an awful final showing against the Lions, and Omon had a great training camp. Simple as that.

Tight Ends (3)

Who they kept: Robert Royal, Derek Schouman, Derek Fine

Who they cut: Courtney Anderson, Tim Massaquoi

Analysis: Royal is pretty much a lock to be the starter because of his strong showing during preseason games and at camp. Anderson was signed as a veteran free agent but never had a big impact on the field and the team elected to try the more talented rookie, Derek Fine.

Wide Receivers (6)

Who they kept: Lee Evans, Josh Reed, Roscoe Parrish, James Hardy, Justin Jenkins, Steve Johnson

Who they cut: Felton Huggins, Scott Mayle, C.J. Hawthorne

Analysis: It's good to see that Johnson made the cut. He showed a lot of promise during the preseason games and was rewarded with a roster spot. Justin Jenkins also showed improvement in this year's camp, but he is also going to be heavily utilized on special teams, and that is a big reason he made the cut.

Offensive Line (9)

Who they kept: Derrick Dockery, Melvin Fowler, Brad Butler, Langston Walker, Kirk Chambers, Jason Whittle, Duke Preston, Demetrius Bell, Matt Murphy

Who they cut: Robert Felton, Christian Gaddis, Dustin Dickinson, Nevin McCaskill

Analysis: Decisions had to be made to fill in for an absent Jason Peters, and also to account for the heavy amount of injuries already suffered by this group. Expect either Bell or Murphy to be cut if Peters does decide to return.

Defensive Line (9)

Who they kept: Aaron Schobel, Kyle Williams, Marcus Stroud, Chris Kelsay, Chris Ellis, Copeland Bryan, John McCargo, Ryan Denney, Spencer Johnson

Who they cut: Jason Jefferson, Derrick Jones, Corey Mace, Teraz McCray, Shaun Nua

Analysis: Veteran Jason Jefferson just couldn't match the fresh talent of Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson, and the numbers game took its toll. Otherwise, the defensive line was pretty much already set with its batch of starters and backups. The players they kept will be able to have a nice cycle to keep everyone fresh during games.

Linebackers (6)

Who they kept: Angelo Crowell, Paul Posluszny, Kawika Mitchell, Keith Ellison, John DiGiorgio, Jon Corto

Who they cut: Jon Banks, Marcus Buggs, Blake Costanzo, Donnie Spragan

Analysis: Spragan couldn't hold onto his spot after being brought in during camp to provide more depth. He didn't provide enough impact on the field during the preseason games to warrant a roster spot. It's nice to see Orchard Park native, Jon Corto, making the cut. Hometown players are always a crowd pleaser. Doesn't get any homier than Orchard Park, instead of Buffalo.

Cornerbacks (5)

Who they kept: Terrence McGee, Jabari Greer, Leodis McKelvin, Reggie Corner, Ashton Youboty

Who they cut: Will James, Kennard Cox

Analysis: James was a surprise cut in the most competitive position this training camp. Ashton Youboty was able to keep his roster spot after having a very good camp and solid performances during the preseason games. This is a position that will have a lot of depth this season, and decisions were most likely difficult at this position.

Who they kept: Donte Whitner, Ko Simpson, George Wilson, Bryan Scott, John Wendling

Who they cut: Kennard Cox

Analysis: Cox is really a cornerback but saw a lot of time playing safety during camp and the preseason games. He is very talented and the team will most likely keep him for their practice squad. Other than that, there were no decisions to make at this position.

Special teams (3)

Who they kept: Brian Moorman, Rian Lindell, Ryan Neill

Who they cut: D.J. Fitzpatrick

Analysis: This was another no-brainer. Fitzpatrick had a better chance at quarterback than unseating Moorman from his punting duties.
