Broncos Team Report

The Broncos spent big bucks to acquire free agent Daryl Gardener to provide a boost inside. But they may find their home-grown talent is much cheaper, with plenty of upside. <p> No player has impressed more at recent mini-camps than second-year pro Dorsett Davis.

He has looked so good, in fact, coaches have moved him ahead of starter Lional Dalton at the "three-technique" defensive tackle spot.

Part of the reason for the switch is that Davis' talent seems suited to Denver's new scheme under defensive coordinator Larry Coyer, a plan predicated on quick penetration from the pass rush (with 2.8 seconds to the quarterback considered optimal by the front four). Like perennial Pro Bowl lineman Trevor Pryce, with whom Davis shares a body type and who also played the waiting game as a rookie, Davis seems to have that quick jump off the ball.

Davis (6-foot-5, 305 pounds) also has experimented some at defensive end, particularly at May mini-camp. There, he dominated the tight ends that tried to block him.

"I'm going to let them do whatever they want with my talent," Davis said. "I'm showing them what I've got on my field. If I don't excel, it won't be because of me, because I'm going hard, full speed every play and doing all I can to get to that ball and to get to that quarterback."

Fans might be wondering who is Dorsett Davis.

After all he was a non-participant in all 16 games as a rookie, after coming to Denver as a third-round pick from Mississippi State. But like Pryce several years earlier, Davis seems appears ready for a breakthrough.

"I'd be hard-pressed to see that there was anybody who made a bigger jump than Dorsett has from this point last year," said general manager Ted Sundquist.
