Three strikes and you're out works in baseball, but it remains to be seen whether that applies to Broncos tight end Dwayne Carswell.

The 31-year-old Carswell, who just two years ago earned a trip to the Pro Bowl, is in trouble again for domestic violence -- his third arrest in five years.

The latest accusation involves charges in Atlanta that he picked up his girlfriend by the neck.

Last year he agreed to restitution and community service after a second mistrial on charges that he assaulted and harassed a former girlfriend. In 1998, he was arrested on a similar charge but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of harassment.

According to the NFL's personal conduct policy, a player convicted of or admitting to a criminal violation is subject to discipline as determined by commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Disciplinary action may include a fine, suspension without pay and/or banishment from the league.v The policy also states that any player convicted of or admitting to a second criminal violation will be suspended without pay or banished for a period of time to be determined by the commissioner. The league has acknowledged it is investigating Carswell's status, but wouldn't say a suspension is imminent.

Though it's possible the most recent case could be dragged out until after the season, the Broncos have to be wondering if he's become more of a liability than an asset.

Carswell is listed as a backup to Shannon Sharpe, but there's little question he is a much better blocking tight end.

And with Sharpe expected to call it quits after the 2003 season, the ranks will grow thinner.

The Broncos aren't without a plan, and it figures to include second-year pro Jeb Putzier, who grew up in the same town as new quarterback Jake Plummer.

Coaches were so impressed with Putzier's promise that they released Desmond Clark last year.

Now, with Carswell facing possible NFL suspension if convicted, the Putzier plan may be accelerated.

--Call it the year of change for Jake Plummer. He has a new job in a new city, with a new team and a new house. This summer, he made another big change, becoming engaged to his longtime girlfriend whom he met at Arizona State.

"That's two pretty big life-changing moves. We'll see how things go," he said.

--There's little question the Broncos are expecting big things out of Rod Smith this year. So much so that he is featured on the cover of the 2003 media guide.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think this team is going to win and it's not going to be only because of me. It's going to be because of a lot of guys." -- New quarterback Jake Plummer on insisting he is just one piece of the puzzle in Denver.
