Mile High Mailbag: Rahim Moore A Ballhawk?

Publisher, Chad Jensen, answers your Broncos-related questions via Twitter in his weekly Mile High Mailbag. Today, he talks about Rahim Moore turning the corner as a ballhawk.

Welcome to the Mile High Mailbag, where we answer your burning Broncos questions via Twitter and feature you in the article. In this week's edition, I received a question of great import.

Excellent question. There's no getting around it. When Shannon Sharpe called out Rahim Moore's name at the podium in New York City, way back in 2011, he immediately came to Denver with some expectations. John Elway, and the Broncos, expected him to translate his collegiate ballhawking prowess to the pros.

In Moore's sophomore season at UCLA, he intercepted 10 passes, which was the most any player had since 2003. An eye popping statistic, when you factor in that it was only his 2nd season starting for the Bruins. This production put him on the radar of every NFL scout in the country. As a result of his prodigious play, he was named to every All-American team.

However, in his junior 2010 season, there was a marked drop off in his interceptions. In Scout.com's scouting report, they had this to say about this decline.

"The accolades continued heading into 2010. However, Moore would have a bigger challenge on his hands as the UCLA defense was decimated by graduation. Moore has become a leader on the field and through seven games ranks third on the team in tackles and has one of the team's three interceptions so far in the season. The absence of a consistent pass rush has certainly diminished Moore's effectiveness this year. He has even practiced some at the corner position due to a lack of other options."

The Bruins lost a lot of talent that season. Moore wasn't able to feast on quarterbacks under duress, like he had the year before. He ended 2010 with only a single INT. Nonetheless, Moore declared for the NFL draft, following his junior season. Even though he wasn't able to notch many turnovers, he still had a very good junior outing. As a result, he was widely considered the best safety prospect in the draft.

The Broncos pulled the trigger and selected Moore with the 45th pick in the 2011 draft. This was the season that was truncated by the NFL lockout. The owners and player's union were in mortal combat over how the fruits of the league would be divided. By the time the dispute was settled, and a new collective bargaining agreement was made, it left little time for teams, and rookies, to assimilate and prepare for the rigors of a 16-game season.

Despite this obstacle, Moore thrived initially in training camp. The coaches gave him every opportunity to succeed and he was subsequently plugged into the starting lineup. In the preseason, he was fined for a heavy hit to Bills receiver, Donald Jones. But at the time, it looked like he was on his way to making a name for himself.

But Moore ended up having a disappointing rookie campaign. After beginning the season as a starter, in tandem with Brian Dawkins, he was eventually replaced down the stretch by fellow rookie, Quinton Carter. Moore struggled with missed tackles. His technique was flawed, as it seemed like he was constantly taking bad angles to the ball carrier. He ended the season with 1 INT.

2012 came around and it seemed as if Moore had bounced back from the hard knocks of the rookie learning curve. Dawkins had retired and Carter was on IR with a knee injury. Moore actually had a solid season in 2012. The Broncos were the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL and Moore's improved play was a big reason why. ProFootballFocus gave him a +8.9 overall grade for his efforts. But even so, again, he only had 1 INT on the season. Not exactly a ballhawk's production.

When the Broncos hosted the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round of the playoffs that year, Moore suffered a blow to his self esteem and image with the fans, in a Bill Buckner-esque miscue that ended up contributing significantly to the Broncos losing that game at home. Everyone in Broncos Country has the image of Moore stretching out, as he mis-timed his jump on a deep ball down the right sideline, thrown by Joe Flacco, and saw it sail over his outstretched fingers into the hands of Jacoby Jones for a touchdown. It was an embarrassing play, but cornerback, Tony Carter, was as much to blame for the faux pas as Moore.

Instead of crawling into a hole and dying away, Moore vowed that he'd come back better and stronger than ever. Despite that terrible mishap in the playoffs, the Broncos still had faith in him. And Moore has never lacked self confidence. PFF included him in their "Secret Superstar" series that off-season. Here's a snippet of what they had to say.

"Can one play define a player’s career? That is the dilemma we face with our latest Secret Superstar, Rahim Moore. The Denver Broncos’ second-year safety proved himself to be one of the best at his position in 2012. He attacked his biggest weakness from a rough rookie season and turned it into a strength. In doing so, he earned positive grades in all aspects of his game."

Moore bounced back in 2013. In only 672 snaps, Moore earned a +3.3 grade in pass coverage from PFF. But following a victory vs the Kansas City Chiefs in week 11, Moore was rushed to the hospital with extreme pain and discomfort in his leg. The doctors diagnosed him with lateral compartment syndrome, an affliction that almost cost him his leg.

Following emergency surgery, Moore was able to keep his leg, but his 2013 season was done. On the year, he had 2 INTs, a mark that saw him match his career totals to that point. Now, Moore is back. And he's healthy. He has a 13-inch scar on his leg, a reminder of the close call that almost cost him his leg and his career.

Moore has talked a lot about gratitude in the subsequent months. He stood on the brink of oblivion and emerged on the other side better for it. This year, Moore gets to play next to one of the NFL's best strong safeties. Namely, T.J. Ward. Ward's versatility and range will allow Moore to sit back and do what he was drafted to do. Be a ballhawking center-fielder.

In week 1 vs the Indianapolis Colts, the Broncos ran a lot of Cover 3 schemes. This freed Moore up to not only play centerfield, but to have the freedom to read the play in front of him and react. The Broncos now have the personnel on defense that will end up producing a lot of turnovers in the secondary. Moore picked off Andrew Luck twice last Sunday, already matching his career high for a single season. We could very well see Moore live up to the expectations that the team and the fans had for him since the day he was drafted.

I feel that playing with Ward, Moore will become one of the best free safeties in the NFL. And if last week was any precursor of the future, we might see Moore duplicate the INT numbers he had as a sophomore at UCLA. Double digit INTs.
