Broncos Target 6 Head Coaching Candidates

As the Broncos officially begin the search for their next head coach, six candidates have risen to the surface.

For the first time since the Denver Broncos lost at home in the Divisional Round of the playoffs to the Indianapolis Colts, John Elway spoke to the media today. Since that fateful 24-13 loss, much has transpired in the Mile High City.

John Fox is no longer the head coach. In case you've been living under a rock, Fox and the Broncos "mutually" decided to part ways yesterday, jettisoning Fox into the free agent coaching market, and the Broncos into a full blown search for a new head coach.

What kind of coach fits the bill? If Elway made anything clear earlier today, it was that he's looking for a coach who is "aching to win a world championship". The phrase "Super Bowl" and "world championship" must have been uttered by him two dozen times.

Translation: the Broncos are looking for a coach who has a Super Bowl-winning pedigree.

Elway admitted that he and his staff had yet to begin the search in earnest, before today's press conference, but that contacting potential candidates would be the first order of business afterward.

Let's take a look at the guys Elway has in mind and how they could possibly fit in with the Broncos.

Dan Quinn: DC Seattle Seahawks

Arguably the hottest head coaching candidate on the market, Quinn brings to the table a shiny piece of hardware earned after coordinating his defense to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy last February. At the expense of the Broncos.

Just about every NFL team with a head coaching vacancy has expressed an interest in Quinn. And for good reason. Under Pete Carroll, the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks have become the team to beat in the NFL. Their blueprint is the one that NFL teams are scrambling to emulate.

As a Carroll disciple, Quinn brings that moxie and that inside experience of what it takes to lead an organization to the top of the mountain. And make no mistake, that is an element that Elway is keying in on.

The issue for the Broncos is that the Seahawks are still alive in the playoffs. They're set to host the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game this weekend. If they win, the Broncos would not be able to make the hire, presuming Quinn reciprocates the interest, for another three weeks.

Gary Kubiak: OC Baltimore Ravens

As the local fan favorite to win the job, Kubiak makes sense on many levels. First and foremost, he owns a Super Bowl ring; three in fact. One was earned as the quarterbacks coach of the 1994 San Francisco 49ers and the other two as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach of the back-to-back Broncos Super Bowl champion teams of the late '90s.

Adding to the intrigue is his connection to Elway. He backed up Elway at quarterback for nine years. They were training camp roommates and accomplished much together on the grid-iron.

They also happen to be very good friends. And he has head coaching experience as the Houston Texans top dog for eight years (2006-13), leading them to their first playoff victory as a franchise. He was eventually fired when the QB he hitched his star to, Matt Schaub, imploded in epic fashion.

However, Kubiak is a disciple of Mike Shanahan and as such, his methodology might not jive in the short term with Peyton Manning. Manning's offenses are tilted more towards the spread-em-out hurry-up approach, utilizing 11 personnel (3 WR) and the shotgun.

Kubiak's offensive philosophy is geared more toward the running game; zone blocking, play-action, bootlegs. A QB in such a system should at least be marginally mobile, which Manning certainly is not.

One last factor is that Kubiak recently withdrew his name from head coaching consideration, going so far as to say that he is happy with the Ravens and plans on returning for 2015. But, if the NFL's top closer wants Kubiak, he'll get him.

Teryl Austin: DC Detroit Lions

Austin recently emerged as a candidate in Denver and although most casual fans have never heard of him, he is accomplished and well-respected in the NFL. If hired, he would be the first African American head coach in Broncos franchise history.

In his one and only season as a pro coordinator, Austin coached the Lions defense to the top of the league. The Lions were the No. 2 scoring defense, allowing an average of just 17.6 points per game. They were also No. 2 in total defense, behind only Seattle. Oh, and Austin coached the No. 1 ranked rushing defense, who only allowed a jaw-dropping 69.3 yards per game.

But does he have that Super Bowl-winning pedigree? He does. He was the defensive backs coach of the 2012 Ravens, who you'll remember upset the Broncos in double overtime at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. That team went on to defeat the 'Niners in the Super Bowl. He's got the bling.

What Austin doesn't have is head coaching experience at the pro level. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just look at Mike Tomlin. The bottom line is that the teams Austin has contributed to, both at the collegiate and pro level, have been wildly successful and in no small measure due to him. He is the darkhorse candidate to land the job.

Rick Dennison: QB coach Baltimore Ravens

Like Kubiak, Dennison has strong ties to the Broncos and in fact interviewed for the head coaching job, both in 2009 and 2011. He played with Elway throughout the '80s and was a coaching assistant under the Shanahan administration.

And yes, he has the world championship pedigree, sporting two rings; both earned as a Broncos assistant. The issue with Dennison is that in his opportunities as an offensive coordinator, he hasn't been very productive. Some would say that he's lacked creativity.

Also, there's likely a reason he's been passed over as a head coach so many times. Nevertheless, he's on the Broncos head coaching radar for the third time in his career.

Adam Gase and Jack Del Rio

Many Broncos fans wouldn't be happier if neither of these coordinators ever coached in Denver again. But both are hot candidates in the market and have strong qualifying characteristics and respectable track records. When asked today whether either of Fox's top assistants would be considered as Broncos head coaching candidates, Elway was forthright.

“Yes, they are candidates," Elway said. "As far as the coaches—I know there was some misinformation out there—the coaches have not been released. They are still under contract with the Broncos. I did give them the ability to talk to different people, but they have not all been released. They are still under contract with the Broncos.”

Of the two candidates, only Del Rio has a Super Bowl ring, earned as the linebackers coach of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. He has head coaching experience (nine years with the Jacksonville Jaguars). And in his three years as the Broncos defensive coordinator, his defense has finished in the top-5 twice (2012 and 2014).

But many would argue that Del Rio is part of the problem and absolutely complicit in the Broncos post-season flops. His defense often became predictable and would fade down the stretch. The Oakland Raiders have a great interest in him, having interviewed him twice now for their head coaching vacancy.

Of all the candidates on this list, only Gase lacks a Super Bowl ring. Of course, his resume is crowned by having coordinated the best and most productive offense in the history of the NFL, leading the Broncos to a record 606 points in 2013. He was also the architect of Manning's prodigious numbers, which culminated in him breaking the NFL record for passing touchdowns in a single season (55).

Gase and Quinn are the hottest names in the head coaching market right now. The Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers have both courted him. The 'Niners seem dead-set on making him Jim Harbaugh's replacement.

The 'Niners flew to Denver today to conduct their second interview with him and the word around the league is that they plan on not letting Gase leave the meeting without having consummated the deal.

However, Denver media reports have indicated that Elway told Gase to "check with me" before he officially accepts any head coaching job offer. Sounds like he wants the opportunity to consider matching, or exceeding whatever the 'Niners offer him.

Although Elway made it clear that Manning is still a big part of the team's short term plans, Gase arguably represents the best chance of coaxing the 5-time MVP back for 2015.

The bottom line is that Elway and the Broncos are looking for a coach who knows what it takes to win it all. Someone who has a fire in their belly and understands the modern day blueprint for winning the Super Bowl.

Elway's tired of his team getting out to hot starts in the regular season, only to fade down the stretch and crumble in the post-season. He was not happy with how the Broncos went down last Sunday without "kicking and screaming" (his words). Broncos Country would heartily agree.

We also know that Manning will be involved in the decision, which could complicate the process. Manning has two years, at best, left in the tank and it's possible that some of these candidates might be turned off by the prospect of being held hostage by him.

Personally, I think such speculation is unfounded. Most NFL coaches would kill for the opportunity to coach Peyton Manning, let alone lead a team quarterbacked by him. And there's no question that the Broncos have the personnel pieces in place to get to the top, including a talented young QB who has been groomed behind Manning, with an eye toward the future.

Ultimately, that was Fox's biggest failing. He had all of the pieces, but he couldn't figure out how to put them together on the field and get over the post-season hump. Elway is looking for someone innovative enough to overcome that obstacle and get the Broncos peaking at the right time.

Update

The Oakland Raiders officially hired Jack Del Rio as their new head coach, which was expected. The San Francisco 49ers became tired of waiting on Adam Gase and instead chose to hire from within, promoting defensive line coach, Jim Tomsula.

Also new to the mix is former 'Niners defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, who was passed over by one of his assistants. There have been local reports that the Broncos have an interest in him.
