Mile High Mailbag: Manning, Osweiler, Draft

In the latest edition of the Mile High Mailbag, Lead Analyst Chad Jensen answers questions regarding the Broncos future at quarterback, physicality and potential draft targets in the first round.

Welcome to the Mile High Mailbag, where we answer your burning Denver Broncos questions via social media. The following questions come from members on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. If you have a question, make sure you're following MHH on these various social media sites -- just hit us up.

Just three years ago, the Broncos spent a valuable second round pick on Brock Osweiler. His selection came on the heels of John Elway's blockbuster move in free agency that saw him bring Peyton Manning to Denver.

At the time, there were still many questions surrounding Manning's health. Four neck surgeries and a year out of football clouded his future with uncertainty. The Broncos obviously were confident in the state of his health, hence the five-year, $96M contract they gave him, but even they likely didn't expect Manning to storm back at such a prolific pace, like he did.

Osweiler was drafted to be the team's quarterback of the future and a stop-gap, should complications arise with Manning's health. Fortunately, Manning's neck and the nerve damage in his arm, had healed and regenerated and the Broncos would go on to win a lot of games and three consecutive division titles.

Fast forward to today and the Broncos are faced with deciding whether to bring back Manning and his $19M salary, or turn the team over to Osweiler and let the chips fall. Manning met with Elway on Thursday and the 5-time MVP reportedly confirmed that he's ready and willing to play in 2015, putting the ball in the Broncos court.

Manning's coming back. The Broncos want to win the Super Bowl. The likelihood of that happening is significantly higher with Manning under center than Osweiler. This means that Osweiler will ride the pine for the fourth and final year of his contract with the Broncos.

There were rumblings yesterday that Elway could be looking to extend Osweiler now on a team-friendly deal, rather than waiting until 2016 when Osweiler will be an unrestricted free agent. It makes sense. The Broncos believe in Osweiler and like Manning, he remains a part of the organizational paradigm.

This brings us to the draft. With Osweiler likely to be around beyond 2015, the Broncos are in no rush to draft another quarterback. They used a seventh round pick in 2013 on Zac Dysert. He spent his rookie year on the active roster and last season on the practice squad. Dysert is raw but talented and could be a great fit in Gary Kubiak's offense.

What makes it even more unlikely that the Broncos look for a QB high in the draft is the fact that his year's class of signal callers is one of the weakest in recent memory. Beyond Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, the pickins' are slim.

Colorado State's Garrett Grayson and UCLA's Brett Hundley stand at the top of the next tier of QBs in this class. Grayson emerged as the best QB at the Senior Bowl, while Hundley declined his invitation to play in Mobile.

Neither option represents an upgrade over what the Broncos currently have on the roster. I would be shocked if they took a QB in the first three rounds of the draft, and wouldn't be surprised if they don't use a valuable selection at all on a signal caller. But ultimately, that depends on how Kubiak views Dysert.

The next question comes from Daniel R. via our Facebok page. Q: Do you think the Broncos lack physicality and speed on both sides of the ball?

Great question. The Broncos fielded a top-5 defense in 2014. Elway's off-season acquisitions -- DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib -- all impacted the defense, each earning a trip to the Pro Bowl. The Broncos got a great return on investment.

But despite the unit's statistics, individual accolades, and placement in the league's top-5, there seemed to be something missing. Following their disappointing divisional-round playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts, it be came apparent what that missing ingredient was.

Physicality.

The defense wasn't the only unit complicit in this deficiency. The offense absolutely lacked that fire and intensity, as their mystifying performance showcased. Neither unit went down "kicking and screaming" and it angered Elway greatly, ultimately leading to the "mutual" dismissal of John Fox and most of his staff.

In all honesty, I lay the Broncos lack of physicality and intensity at the feet of the coaches. It's the job of the coaching staff to instill this philosophy and mindset in their team. Look at the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Neither team has more, or better, talent than the Broncos. But their will to win and tenacity on the grid-iron, is what ultimately set them apart and earned them a trip to the Super Bowl. It's no coincidence that both teams are coached by the two best coaches in the NFL currently -- Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick.

Carroll and Belichick aren't just gameday masters of strategy and scheme. Their success starts at the institutional level by instilling a culture of enthusiasm and accountability. And it ultimately enhances and informs each player's performance on the grid-iron.

Elway recognizes this. And his move to hire Gary Kubiak and his staff is a step in the right direction toward getting the Broncos to the same level as the Seahawks and Patriots. Nevermind that Kubiak ultimately failed in his first opportunity as a head coach in the NFL.

Along the way, he led the fledgling Houston Texans to their first playoff victories and division title in franchise history. Coaches are no different than any other human being. They often learn more from their failures than they do their successes.

Belichick failed in his first stint as a head coach in Cleveland. As did Carroll -- twice. Both guys were ultimately able to learn from their failures and use it as fuel to catapult their future teams to league dominance.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to get lucky in finding a quarterback in the middle and late rounds of the draft, who would go on to become a Super Bowl champion. Tom Brady was famously drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft -- the seventh QB taken. Wilson was picked in the third, after guys like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden.

Even still, Belichick and Carroll did the legwork and ultimately made the decisions to draft these two stars and it paid off down the road. The NFL is a QB-driven league and Elway and Kubiak know this. Without the most crucial of personnel pieces, even the most talented rosters (see Arizona) can only get so far. There are very few exceptions to this rule.

The bottom line is yes, the Broncos lacked physicality in 2014. And the culprits are now coaching elsewhere. Kubiak and his coordinators, Rick Dennison and Wade Phillips, know how to get it done on the field. Accountability will be a mantra moving forward.

Expect to see a different tone from the Broncos in 2015 -- one with urgency and physicality. Whether or not Kubiak can follow in the footsteps of Carroll and Belichick, and find Super Bowl success, after failing as a head coach the first time, remains to be seen. Only time will tell.

Our last question comes from Drew M. via our Facebok page. Q: What position do you see the Broncos potentially targeting in the first round of the draft?

Elway uses the strategy of drafting the best player available, based on the big board that he and his scouting department assemble. In this system, the highest rated player on their board still available when they go on the clock, is the one selected. But despite the highly misunderstood "BPA" approach, all big boards, and the individual player values assigned therein, are ultimately constructed based on roster needs.

For the Broncos, they need offensive linemen -- players who fit the zone running scheme that Kubiak and Dennison will deploy. The Broncos currently hold the No. 28 pick in the first round. With it, I expect them to target an offensive lineman.

They are reportedly looking for at least two new starters along the offensive line; a left guard and right tackle. Last year's third round pick, tackle Michael Schofield, was an abject failure and failed to dress for a single game.

It's too soon to tell if the Broncos have given up on Schofield, but I doubt it. He'll get one more training camp to prove that he has what it takes to succeed. Orlando Franklin, last year's left guard, is set to be an unrestricted free agent and is widely considered to be the top offensive lineman on the market. He'll likely command a price tag that the Broncos won't be willing to match.

The Broncos reportedly plan on keeping Ryan Clady at left tackle, of course, and moving Louis Vasquez back to his natural position at right guard. Will Montgomery is reportedly in the team's free agent plans and they have a developmental center on the practice squad in Matt Paradis.

Left guard and right tackle will be the first order of business for the Broncos and I expect them draft one in the first round. Pittsburgh's T.J. Clemmings projects as a right tackle in the pros and has the athleticism to excel in the zone blocking scheme. He could be available at No. 28.

A darkhorse candidate at No. 28 is Duke's Laken Tomlinson, a kid who's been quickly rising on most draft boards. However, his natural spot is at right guard, so drafting him would entail either him learning to play left guard, or asking Vasquez to slide over from right guard.

I watched both players closely all week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala and came away extremely impressed, especially after talking with them one-on-one. One other guy who could be an option is La'el Collins, a tackle from Louisana State. He is more likely to be on the board at No. 28.
