ENGLEWOOD, Co--Today, the Denver Broncos tendered three exclusive rights free agents (ERFA), linebacker Brandon Marshall, tackle Paul Cornick, and guard Ben Garland, Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager John Elway announced.
Marshall, a former 2012 fifth round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, emerged in 2014 as a bona fide star, stopping the gap at weakside linebacker when Danny Trevathan went down. Marshall finished the season with 110 combined tackles (88 solo), 2 sacks and a forced fumble. He showed surprising skill in pass coverage, defending 9 passes and intercepting one pass. This performance earned him a nod as a Pro Bowl alternate.
Cornick went undrafted in 2012 out of North Dakota State and started three games at right tackle and three at blocking tight end in the jumbo package for the Broncos in 2014. He proved to be an asset in the run game but struggled some with speed rushers off the edge. He has great upside and at the very least, this tender shows that the new Gary Kubiak regime wants to see him compete in their zone blocking system this summer.
Garland, also undrafted our of the Air Force Academy, appeared in eight games for the Broncos in 2014, after securing a spot on the 53-man roster for the first time in his career. Garland could be a great fit in Kubiak’s zone scheme and will get an opportunity to ply his wares this summer in training camp.
Defensive end John Youboty is also an ERFA, but was not tendered by the team. Youboty injured his achilles last training camp and spent the season on injured reserve. The former undrafted rookie free agent out of Temple has talent, but has struggled to find traction in the pros.
