Report: Broncos Interested In Top Two Centers

It's no secret that the Broncos are in need of help at the center position. A recent report sheds light on how they intend to proceed in free agency.

With the NFL free agency period set to open this upcoming Tuesday, March 10th, speculation surrounding how the Denver Broncos will proceed has been rampant. The Broncos have several key roster needs, with center being one of them.

Rodney Hudson and Stefen Wisniewski are generally considered to be the top two available centers on the market. Scout.com has them ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. New to the market, however, is former Broncos and Houston Texans center Chris Myers.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos have an interest in both Hudson and Wisniewski, although they have to be careful how they express it, so as not to get flagged for tampering. Via Klis.

The Broncos have expressed interest in both centers. It is known the Chiefs want Hudson back and the Indianapolis Colts are among the teams in need of a center, so the Broncos may have to pay more than $7 million a year to get him. If the bidding gets too rich, the Broncos may consider Wisniewski at roughly $5 million to $6 million per year.

For whatever it’s worth, I don’t’ see the Broncos spending that kind of money on a center, even though Hudson is one of the league’s best young players at the position. With roughly $19M in available cap space, $7M is a lot of lettuce.

However, as John Elway and his cap czar Michael Sullivan have proven in recent years, they know how to structure their deals in a way that mitigates immediate cap impact, often resulting in team-friendly, or cap-friendly, contracts. So anything is possible.

Starting tomorrow, we could learn more about just how interested the Broncos are in any of these centers, as the players’ agents will be free to begin communicating and negotiating with NFL teams on their behalf. No contract can be signed before the NFL free agency period opens on Tuesday, however.
