Report: Broncos Offer Green Multi-Year Deal

With tight end Virgil Green set to be an unrestricted free agent, a recent report indicates how much the Broncos value his services and wish to retain him.

Nicknamed “The Hulk” by his teammates, retaining Virgil Green has emerged as emerged as a top priority for the Denver Broncos in free agency. According to the Denver Post’s Troy Renck, the Broncos have offered a multi-year contract to the 26-year-old tight end. However, the Broncos aren’t the only team interested in his services. Unless the Broncos and General Manager John Elway are willing to pony up the cash, fans could see Green in another uniform next season.

Signing Green to a long-term deal is yet another signal of Denver’s intent to gain toughness and physicality this offseason. According to Pro Football FocusJulius Thomas’ time in orange and blue.

Despite catching a remarkable 24 touchdowns in the past two seasons, the Broncos aren’t likely to re-sign the star tight end. Thomas simply isn’t the all-around tight end the Broncos are looking for. Virgil Green is. Green is an elite blocking tight end, with the athleticism to develop into a quality receiving target.

However, the Broncos will have to fight hard if they want to retain Green’s services. According to Renck, thirteen teams have already approached Green’s agent, and “six to eight” have expressed serious interest in his services. A dollar figure on these contract offers won’t be known until Tuesday. However, based on comparable tight ends around the league, Green should expect to make $2-3M per year.

Green is reportedly excited about the process, but noted that he intends to take his time and make the best decision he can. “I love playing in Denver, I love the fans,” he told Renck. “But, I can’t make the decision just based on that.” This news comes as teams across the NFL scramble to develop their offseason strategies. For the Broncos, it’s clear Virgil Green is a top priority.
