Green Signing Critical for Denver’s Future

Jake Marsing talks about how tight end Virgil Green is critical to the destiny of the Denver Broncos.

Bruising tight end Virgil Green is heading back to the Mile High City on a three-year deal worth $8.4M, according to a press release via the Denver Broncos. Signing Green had been General Manager John Elway’s top priority heading into free agency, and for good reason. According to Pro Football Focus, Green is a top five run blocking tight end in the NFL. Retaining his services will pay dividends for Elway as the Broncos begin implementing new head coach Gary Kubiak’s run-based offense.

The Broncos need foundational players. They need tough guys and people movers capable of changing the culture at Dove Valley. Green is that kind of player. He’s a leader in the Broncos locker room, who has instantly added intensity and toughness to a Peyton Manning offense built on precision and finesse. With the departure of All-Pro Julius Thomas to Jacksonville, Green could become the top target for Denver in the middle of the field, although some targets will likely go to the newest member of the Broncos, TE Owen Daniels.

Despite only catching one touchdown pass in his career, Green has demonstrated the athleticism to become an elite pass catcher. However, much like a snow blower in June, he simply hasn’t been used that often. But, anyone who questions his potential in the passing game need only look to the bidding war that apparently took place between Denver and Chicago, a team led by his former head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

Virgil Green could emerge as the centerpiece of the Broncos offense in 2015. He’s an elite run blocker with the skillset to develop into a top flight pass-catcher. By keeping Green in Denver, John Elway acquired the first of what will likely be several high value free agents. Signing players like Green means Broncos fans likely won’t see their team sign high price, big name free agents this offseason. But, with guys who can add toughness and intensity to the roster like Virgil Green, the Broncos don’t need them.
