Julius Thomas finally got what he’s been searching for—a huge deal, with guaranteed money that will provide him the security against injury that he wanted the Denver Broncos to offer. John Elway was reticent to acquiesce for obvious reasons.
Thomas has signed a five-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, worth $9.2M per year, with a whopping $24M guaranteed. He will now serve as second-year quarterback Blake Bortles’ security blanket and a bona-fide weapon in the middle of the field and in the redzone.
Although Thomas caught 24 touchdown passes over the last two seasons, and was subsequently elected to two Pro Bowls, Broncos fans can’t help but point out the correlation to his astronomical numbers and the guy who was throwing him the ball—Peyton Manning. Do not underestimate the Manning Effect.
Thomas is likely to find out just how good he had it in Denver and how hard it is for most NFLers to make it to the league’s All-Star game, purely on their own merits. Fans shouldn’t be too hard on Thomas though. Since last summer, the Broncos haven’t made an offer to Thomas. The guy needs a job somewhere, right?
Elway’s Broncos will now turn to Virgil Green, who just re-signed on a three-year deal and two-time Pro Bowler, Owen Daniels, to fill Thomas’ shoes. Green is a much more proficient blocker and an underrated target in the passing game and Daniels will likely serve as one of the team’s primary redzone targets moving forward.
