NFL draft fever is spreading like wildfire across the football universe. In Denver, the situation is critical condition. To compensate for players the Denver Broncos lost last offseason, the team has been awarded four compensatory picks in the upcoming NFL draft. Those picks will come in the fourth, sixth, and seventh rounds. The team will now have ten picks to make when the draft kicks off in Chicago on April 30th.
Compensatory picks are awarded at the NFL’s annual winter meetings, currently being held in Scottsdale, AZ. While it’s been known for some time Denver would likely have four compensatory picks, the placement of those picks has been in question until now. In addition to their six already scheduled picks, Denver now holds four additional selections at 133, 208, 250, and 251. Denver General Manager John Elway will have to use each one of them wisely if he wants to compete for a championship in 2015.
Compensatory picks are awarded to teams who lost free agents the previous offseason. Denver is receiving picks for the loss of wide receiver Erick Decker, guard Zane Beadles, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, defensive end Shaun Phillips, linebacker Wesley Woodyard, and running back Knowshon Moreno. All of them left the Broncos last offseason after not receiving an offer from Denver.
While that may sound like a brutal offseason, Elway and the Broncos spent over $112M on the first day of free agency last season to try and replace some of the talent they’d lost, adding corner Aqib Talib, defensive end DeMarcus Ware, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and safety T.J. Ward to the roster. This offseason has been significantly lower key for the Broncos, however. Elway will have to need the players drafted with these compensatory picks, and the other six picks the Broncos hold, if the team is going to once again be in the super bowl conversation come playoff time.
Via the Broncos:
The NFL Management Council has revised the 2015 compensatory draft picks for three clubs, including the Denver Broncos, the league announced on Wednesday. Due to a database error, the Management Council has recalculated the selections and changed the Broncos’ sixth-round pick (208th overall) to a seventh-round choice (250th overall). That selection will be one of three consecutive compensatory picks Denver will have in the seventh round.
