Broncos WR Sanders 'Super Bowl or Bust'

After the first day of the Broncos Phase One of their offseason training program, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders met with the media and shed some light on how he'll be utilized in Gary Kubiak's new offensive scheme, as well as the Super Bowl or Bust expectations.

ENGLEWOOD, CO—Today, the Denver Broncos reconvened for Phase One of their offseason training program. Phase One is strictly strength, conditioning and rehabilitation. In fact, only strength and conditioning coaches are allowed on the field and the players workout without helmets.

But today officially marked day one of the Broncos 2015 program. As such, some players met with the media and were able to give their thoughts on the disappointing playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the new coaching staff and the overall mindset.

Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders stepped up to the podium wearing a Nike shirt that read “Iron Sharpens Iron”—a line from Proverbs 27:17. It’s a mentality espoused by former quarterback Tim Tebow, who once ignited the Broncos with the same mantra before a divisional win back in 2011.

Sanders talked about the first team meeting of the year, which obviously included new head coach Gary Kubiak, and how it oriented the group for the season ahead.

"The message was definitely world championship from the start,” he said. “I think that’s what [Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John] Elway wants. The focus is bringing a world championship to this city, and he showed us a 10 minute clip of the past 20 Super Bowls and the big plays that happened in [those] games. He pretty much told us that it’s going to take a special group of men to bring a world championship to this city. We’ve got the guys in the room that are going to do it and that is the focus.”

Which Player Is The Broncos Best 2015 Free Agent Signing? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!

While some fans would snort in derision in response to the “Super Bowl or Bust” message, it’s par for the course in the NFL, especially among the elite teams of the league, which the Broncos happen to be. Sanders spoke to that, while also acknowledging that the 2015 Broncos are different than their 2014 counterparts.

“It’s definitely a new team,” he said. “We’ve got new coaches. Every year, no matter what organization you play for, you want the standard to be world championship. If it’s not a world championship, it’s a bust. Obviously it’s a new year, but we’ve still got the same goal. We get the opportunity to press the restart button. We’ve got a new coaching staff and we’re trying to chase it, and it started today.”

Sanders recently flew to the Carolinas for what has become known as Peyton Manning’s annual Duke workouts. The only Broncos receiver not in attendance was Demaryius Thomas, as he is in no hurry to risk his health without a long-term contract. However, Sanders, ever the jokester, found a humorous way to let Thomas know that his teammates missed him—a group photo with Thomas’ visage superimposed.

“I had to tease him a little bit,” Sanders said. “I think it was a little bit of Peyton and me. It was one of those things where I was like, ‘We’ve got to at least pick on him a little bit.’ You have to have fun with it. It’s business, but at the end of the day we miss him and we just wanted him to really know, ‘Hey, look, we’re thinking about you. We’re going to put you in the team photo while you handle the business side.’ I think it was just a good laugh and he laughed about it. We almost got every media outlet because almost everybody reported it. I was hoping that I would have gotten you guys.”

Sanders did “get” many in the media. Not MHH, however. The Duke workouts provided Sanders the opportunity to continue to hone his craft with some of the best receivers in the game, as well as continue to build chemistry and rapport with Manning.

Sanders believes that the time off from football and the tectonic changes around Dove Valley have rejuvenated the 5-time league MVP.

“I think for everyone last year was a disappointment,” Sanders said, “but at the same time it’s a new year, so everyone is rejuvenated. Everybody has refocused. You’ve got an opportunity in the offseason to take a month away, don’t think about football. I think everybody is now just getting back into the groove of, ‘Hey, the season is here now. It starts today. Let’s try and get this world championship.’ I think the same thing with Peyton. You talk about a guy that understands that the clock is ticking for him. He loves this game. He’s one of those guys that I say repeatedly that I’ve never seen a guy that loves the game of football as much as he loves it. That passion and that spark is there. He’s still the great leader of this organization and he’s fired up about Kubiak being here and hopefully bringing a world championship to the city.”

Speaking of Kubiak, it is well-known that he’ll bring his brand of the zone running scheme back to the Broncos, which will be different than the offense the Broncos ran under Adam Gase. However, Sanders made it clear that he hopes for a happy medium between Kubiak’s system and Manning’s.

“We’ve got a new coach with Gary Kubiak,” Sanders said. “He runs a zone-blocking scheme. We’re going to be able to run the football, but other than that you’ve got Peyton Manning as your quarterback. I think you’ve got a combination of both. I think it’s going to be really successful once we get everything down pat in terms of hopefully implementing a little bit of Peyton’s offense with Kubiak’s run scheme. I think that’s a recipe for success.

Sanders is a big proponent of second-year receiver Cody Latimer. And Sanders took a minute to talk about the former Indiana Hoosier and what his expectations are for 2015.

“On my Twitter I’m real vocal about Cody, and that’s because I believe in Cody,” Sanders said. “Cody, he’s a special player. He has strong hands. He’s a physical tool. I think that this is going to be the year that he jumps on to the map—on to the scene. I think he’s going to have a big year. I’m happy that he is on my team and in our wide receiver group.”

At 6-foot-2, there’s no doubt that Latimer can be a physical tool outside the numbers. But that has been Sanders’ domain, since joining the team as a free agent in March of 2014. Will Latimer’s emergence translate to Sanders playing more from the slot in 2015?

“That’s what [Wide Receivers Coach] Tyke [Tolbert] told me today,” Sanders said. “When we go into our three-wide receiver package, I am going to move into the slot, which I’m very comfortable doing because I played the slot in Pittsburgh and a lot in college. I’m looking forward to that.”

The prospect of Thomas, Sanders and Latimer on the field at the same time is one that is likely to give NFL defensive coordinators fits. Add to that unit newcomer tight end Owen Daniels, and it gets downright scary.

Many Broncos fans have been left wondering whether Julius Thomas’ departure will hurt the Broncos offense. With the new offensive system and influx of talent, Sanders doesn’t see that as being an issue.

“Owen was out at Duke, and I think Owen is a really good player,” he said. “At the same time, we’ve got a totally different offense. We’re not going to be spreading the ball out, at least that’s what I’m getting from it. We’re going to be more of a balanced attacked and more of a running style. To say that Julius has left, it’s a totally different offense, so we don’t know what Julius would have done in Kubiak’s offense. It’s one of those things where I know Owen’s been in this system for a long time and I think he’s going to be productive again.”

Running back C.J. Anderson figures to be one of the players who stands to benefit most from the new offensive approach. Like the fans, Sanders is eager to see Anderson perform in a scheme that features the running back.

“I think it energizes C.J.,” Sanders said. “I just saw this guy walking in with his chest a little big (laughing). But if I was him, I would be, too. He’s fortunate to be playing in this offense. I think that he’s going to have a big year. At the same time, I tease him and tell him I’m not going to block for him, but I’m looking forward to it. I just want to win ball games. No matter how we get the job done, the ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl.”

After dominating the NFL in the second half of the 2014 season, Anderson earned a Pro Bowl berth and the love and admiration of the fans. We could see him put up numbers in Kubiak’s system that we haven’t seen since the hay-day of the Mike Shanahan era.

A dominant running game is a quarterback’s best friend—especially an aging quarterback—just ask John Elway. Anderson could be the key to not only extending Peyton Manning’s career, but also sending him off into the sunset of retirement in the same way that their boss John Elway did.

As for Emmanuel Sanders, his goal is the same. It’s all about winning and performing at a high individual level. The bar is set at 62.5 yards per game. That’s the magic number, according to Sanders.

“My goal is to always try to have a 1,000 yard season,” he said. “That’s going to be the main focus—62.5 yards per game. That’s going to be my focus because that’s how you get 1,000. Whatever comes after that, that’s a positive. Other than that, as long we win ball games, I’m happy.”

In his second year with the team, Sanders now feels like he can take on more of a leadership role within the locker room. But to him, his brand of leadership, is all about setting a positive example that young players can follow and learn to loosen up and enjoy the process.

“That’s my focus even starting today,” Sanders said. “We were working out and talking to the young guys. It’s not just about being all serious, but also loosening the young guys up. I think that sometimes as a leader you’ve got your guy that sits there and he takes everything serious. I’m one of those guys that is like, ‘Loosen up, man,’ because at the end of day this is a game that we play. We’re all blessed to get paid pretty good money to play this game, but at the end of the day it’s a game and you have to have fun. Last year that’s what I was doing. I was having a lot of fun. I think that’s the reason I was successful. I’m just trying to bring that positive energy to the group.”
