Mile High Mailbag: Which Rookies Make It?

In the post-draft edition of the Mile High Mailbag, MHH Lead Analyst Chad Jensen answers readers' questions about how the Broncos late-round draft picks fit in, the controversy surrounding the team's first two picks, and which UDFA might make the final roster.

Welcome to the Mile High Mailbag where we answer your Denver Broncos questions via social media. If you have a burning question you’d like us to answer, make sure you’re following us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Just use the hash-tag #MileHighMailbag.

Of course, with the NFL Draft recently in the books, most of Broncos Country’s questions this week pertain to the new players, including the nine undrafted college free agents, and how they project and impact the Broncos.

The first question comes from Dale L. via our Facebook page. Q: How well do our later draft picks fare for the future?

Great question. Let’s start with the Broncos sixth round pick—Maryland defensive tackle Darius Kilgo. The 6-foot-3, 319-pound behemoth could be one of this draft class’ diamonds in the rough. Going into the draft, the Broncos had only two true nose guards on the roster—Sylvester Williams and Marvin Austin.

Which Late-Round Pick Will Pay Off Most For Denver? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!

The Broncos needed true depth behind them. Williams projects as the starter and Kilgo, provided he has a strong camp, projects as the team’s No. 3 nose guard. However, the position Kilgo plays features one of the longest learning curves for rookies. There’s just so much to learn and it tests the individual’s football IQ.

In any sport, the coaches want to develop their players to the point where they’re not thinking as much—they’re using their instinct and reacting instead, almost like the subconscious act of breathing. For rookie defensive tackles, it takes time to turn the corner of this learning curve, which likely means we won’t see huge production out of Kilgo early.

But going into his second and third seasons, he could become an anchor defender and possibly even an option at one of the team’s 5-tech defensive end spots, which could be vacated when Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson hit free agency, following the 2015 season. The team believes in Williams, but they hedged that belief with the Kilgo selection.

As for the the trio of players the Broncos selected in the seventh round—Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian, Tulane CB Taurean Nixon and Oklahoma State DB Josh Furman—there’s one player in particular who stands out.

Furman played a hybrid LB/S role for the Cowboys in 2014, most often seen roaming the box. There’s a reason he put up 64 tackles, 14 of which were for a loss, and seven sacks. He’s a physical, instinctual player, and John Elway confirmed over the weekend that the Broncos are going to play him at strong safety.

T.J. Ward, a 2014 Pro Bowler, is the Broncos starter at strong safety. But behind him, the team didn’t have a true strong safety, until they selected Furman. Furman is very much like Ward—similar player traits. But if he’s going to be a long-term answer at strong safety, and maybe even take over when Ward’s contract expires following the 2017 season, he’ll need to get better as a cover artist, which also happens to be an area of weakness for Ward.

I don’t see Nixon making the team, unless he blows the coaching staff away on special teams—specifically as a kick returner. However, he’ll have to get through Omar Bolden first, who showed flashes of brilliance as a return man late in 2014, albeit in limited opportunities.

Trevor Siemian is a developmental QB, nothing more. He’s coming off a torn ACL and has two Elway draft picks ahead of him on the depth chart in Brock Osweiler and Zac Dysert and a 5-time MVP in Peyton Manning.

Siemian has a long, uphill battle to even sniff consideration for the final 53. Even if he were 100% healthy, it would be a tall order. Coming off of such a significant injury, his odds are very low. But as league stalwarts like Tom Brady and Kurt Warner have proven, anything is possible with late-round, or even undrafted developmental QBs.

In the case of the Broncos first round pick, the controversy surrounding Shane Ray is complex and a major component of it stems from him getting arrested for misdemeanor marijuana charges just three days before the NFL Draft. Widely considered a top-15 talent before the incident, Ray plummeted down the first round to within striking distance for the Broncos.

The other factor is that the Broncos gave up two fifth round picks (’15 and ‘16) and a starting-caliber offensive lineman in Manuel Ramirez, to trade with Detroit and jump five spots from No. 28 to No. 23 to select Ray. In a draft where the Broncos had 10 selections going in, I’m not too worried about that fifth rounder this year, but they might have needed it next year if Manning doesn’t return, and the Broncos go into their version of rebuild mode.

To add insult to injury, Ray has an injured foot he sustained in the Citrus Bowl. Both he and the team have expressed optimism that the treatment he’ll receive will make him available in time for the regular season, but it could keep him out of training camp. There’s just no way to know the timetable right now.

However, in the case of Shane Ray, the off-the-field concerns should be mitigated by the strength of culture in the Broncos locker room. Guys like Manning and Ware set the tone and example for how to live and behave like a true pro.

Von Miller has had his own share of off-the-field drama, but he proved in 2014 that he has turned his personal life around and it showed on the field. He went to his third Pro Bowl. If the Broncos can tuck Ray under Miller’s wing and allow Miller to be his “big brother”, so to speak, it could pay dividends for Ray on and off the field. Once healthy, and given the time to assimilate to the playbook, I expect Ray to be a productive member of the Broncos 3-4 defense.

My biggest concern with Ray are his abilities as a run defender. But learning from a guy like Miller, who is an elite edge rusher on one hand, and a dominant run-stopper on the other, should rub off on the former Mizzou star.

As for the Broncos second round pick Ty Sambrailo, the controversy is a little more muted. Most draftniks had him rated as a second-round talent, but some gave him a middle-round grade. Pro Football Focus, whom MHH respects and leans on for deeper insight at times, wasn’t too impressed with the Sambrailo pick.

Intriguing athleticism but not a whole lot of college production. Even against inferior opposition he didn’t dominate and when he was faced with better players he promptly got taught a lesson by Nate Orchard. He’s not ready to start but offers upside as a developmental prospect after 34 draft eligible tackles got a higher production grade.

The team does need a right tackle but Sambrailo lacks the power and pedigree to be that guy right now. Can you say redshirt year?

Where PFF misses the mark is in neglecting to mention or offer insight on Sambrailo’s fit with the Broncos new zone blocking scheme, which requires athleticism, quick feet/footwork, and high football acumen—all attributes he encompasses. Evaluated within the confines of the ZBS, the controversy (what little there is) surrounding Sambrailo withers.

He’s going to get every opportunity to succeed as a rookie. It’ll be interesting to see if the Broncos plan to try him at left guard or right tackle. Reading between the lines of Elway’s comments, I’m thinking right tackle. If I had to bet on it, I’d pencil in Ty Sambrailo as the Broncos starting right tackle come Week 1.

Both the Ray and Sambrailo picks were good ones. As the Broncos transition to Gary Kubiak's offensive scheme and Wade Phillips' defensive scheme, these two young players are linchpins and could end up playing a starring role in the future of the franchise.

Of the nine undrafted players the Broncos agreed to terms with over the weekend, I like Mississippi center Dillon Day and Nevada offensive tackle Kyle Roberts as the darkhorses to make the final roster. Day has many of the traits you look for in a ZBS lineman, but he’ll have to work hard to separate himself from the pack to get final-53 consideration. For Day, much depends on the development of last year’s sixth round pick Matt Paradis.

As for Roberts, MHH’s resident draftnik Erick Trickel had this to say about him, after he spent time studying his film and scouting him.

“Of the three offensive linemen brought up so far, Roberts is the best scheme fit—by far. He has everything you want for a zone blocking offensive linemen. He has good size at 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds. His biggest deficiency is he has to shore up his technique and footwork. He isn’t raw, by any means, but he has a lot of work to do before competing for a starting spot.”

It’s no coincidence that the two UDFAs whose chances I like the best at making the final roster are offensive lineman. The Broncos are in a the process of transitioning to the ZBS and it demands specific players to fit a mold. Orlando Franklin didn’t fit. He’s now in San Diego.

Paul Cornick didn’t fit. He was waived Monday. Gary Kubiak and Rick Dennison are in Elway’s ear about finding the prototypes for the ZBS. Elway has responded by flooding the roster with a bevy of O-linemen who have the skill-set to be shaped into the mold. Day and Roberts personify that objective.
