Projecting The Broncos Starters: Defense, ST

With the NFL season just around the corner, join MHH Analyst Jake Marsing as he projects the starting defense and special teams for the Denver Broncos.

Mid-May through June is the slowest time on the NFL calendar. The draft is over, free agency is in the rear-view mirror, and a few OTA workouts are all fans have to quench their thirst for football.

Could Shane Ray Beat Out DeMarcus Ware? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!

However, this is one of the most important times on the calendar for coaches. The Denver Broncos new staff have gotten their first chance to evaluate their roster, and are no doubt starting to picture what this team will look like come September. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the Broncos roster, and try to project what Wade Phillips’ starting 3-4 defense will look like.

When projecting defensive starters it’s important to remember that the Phillips’ 3-4 is unlike any 3-4 in football. It’s based on player ability. Phillips bases his system on a system that puts players in the position to maximize their own abilities. This defense will be a rotation. Each player will get time on the field. However, this list is a pre-season projection of what the Broncos depth chart will look like on the first day of the regular season.

Special Teams

Brandon McManus: The Broncos want McManus long term, and they won't carry two kickers again. They'll give McManus the chance at the start of the season in the hopes that he's worked on his accuracy. They won't carry two, and Brandon's the one they'll want to make a long term investment in.

Karl Schmitz: The Broncos will choose Schmitz over Britton Colquitt as a salary dump. It doesn’t help Colquitt’s cause that he’s been mediocre ever since John Elway paid him.
