Mile High Mailbag: Gleanings From OTAs

In the latest edition of the Mile High Mailbag, Lead Analyst Chad Jensen answers questions surrounding the Broncos recent storylines out of OTAs.

Today, we’re dealing with a variety of storylines and questions that have come out of the Broncos organized team activities. This week is the last of the team’s OTA schedule, before they get several weeks off and return in late July for training camp.

In case you missed it, the Broncos recently announced their starting offensive line unit going into training camp it. It is as follows: LT Ty Sambrailo, LG Ben Garland, C Gino Gradkowski, RG Louis Vasquez, RT Chris Clark.

Head coach Gary Kubiak has made two things clear—young guys will be given opportunity and the starting O-line is a unit in flux and still open for competition. Will it change before the regular season? If I had to bet on it, I’d say yes.

As our very own Erick Trickel pointed out yesterday, going with a rookie at left tackle is unsettling enough, but when you add a left guard next to him, who has yet to start a game in the NFL, it only fuels the fire. But Garland has worked his tail off to earn this spot and I think he’ll hold on to it.

How do you see the Starting O-Line Shaking Out? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!

However, if anything changes on the O-line, I expect it to happen at center. Although the Broncos gave up a fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to acquire Gradkowski from Baltimore, Matt Paradis has shown real progress and is my darkhorse to win the starting job.

Some see the right tackle as the most unstable, but my take is that Clark is made for the zone blocking scheme and health willing, will lock down the starting job, holding off Ryan Harris and Michael Schofield. 2015 could be Clark’s best season as a pro.

Demaryius Thomas will play for the Broncos in 2015. Let’s get that settled right now. Unless he wants to blow up his entire pro career, he’ll eventually show up at training camp, with or without a new deal. The two camps have until July 15th to come to terms on a contract extension.

When his football truancy starts to cost him money, he’ll show up. The reality is that Thomas wants $16M per year from the Broncos. John Elway isn’t likely to pay that much for a guy who is clearly gifted, but very much a product of the Peyton Manning effect.

Don’t get me wrong—Thomas has top-5 talent. But to pay that kind of money to him, when the Broncos could arguably get the same level of production, or close to it, from Cody Latimer, it simply doesn’t make sense.

Add to that the fact that Elway and team cap wizard Michael Sullivan have to start projecting their future cap situation around a gargantuan Von Miller extension and the picture becomes even more clear. Does John Elway value Demaryius Thomas? Yes. At $16M per year? Nope. Try closer to $12M, which is about what he’ll make playing under the franchise tag in 2015.

In a word, no. However, Todd Davis has made a great impression on his new coaching staff and is in line for second-team duties. With both Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan recovering from offseason surgery, the onus has fallen on guys like Davis to step up in OTAs.

Davis has answered the bell—so far. But he’s also competing with two Elway draft picks in Lamin Barrow and Corey Nelson. The fact that he’s found a way to set himself apart from them already is a good sign that should Marshall or Trevathan experience any setbacks in their recovery, the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Davis could find himself next in line to start.

The way I see it, Brandon McManus has a very slim chance of making the final roster in 2015. Kubiak and company are simply unwilling to waste a valuable spot on the 53-man roster on another specialist. The word out of Dove Valley has been that they want three specialists and are working toward that goal.

More Broncos Stories

All of their roster decisions will be structured around that objective. Right now, Karl Schmitz and Britton Colquitt are “pretty even” in their competition for punter, according to special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillas, which doesn’t bode well for the veteran and his $3M+ cap number.

If Schmitz wins the job, you can count on McManus getting cut. The Broncos are happy with Connor Barth, who went 15-of-16 on field goal attempts in 2014 and unless he takes a major step backward in training camp, he’ll be the placekicker moving forward.

Schmitz has the leg to handle kickoff duties, as well as punts. Killing two birds with one stone makes too much sense, especially when you factor in Colquitt’s ridiculously bloated salary.

If we’re talking about who the starter will be, there’s little doubt that it will be Sylvester Williams. He has reportedly performed very well as the first-team nose guard thus far and has earned some praise from defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Helping Williams’ cause is the fact that he’s a former Elway first round pick and they typically get the first chance to succeed.

Vance Walker is a savvy, versatile veteran who could step in and start, should Williams go down or nose dive. But for now, he’ll likely rotate in and spell each of the three positions on the defensive line. Darius Kilgo has earned a small modicum of public praise from Phillips, but until the pads go on, I take that with a grain of salt.

Don’t forget about Marvin Austin, who arguably out-played Williams last season in fewer opportunities. In 435 snaps last season, Williams earned a -7.6 cumulative grade via Pro Football Focus, while Austin earned a +1.1 grade in 279 snaps. Both players project well in Phillips’ scheme as athletic single-gap penetrators.
