The Reach Block: An Essential For The ZBS

Most Broncos fans know that their team has moved back to the zone blocking system, but many of them don't really know what that means. MHH Senior Analyst Doc Bear explains one of the most essential techniques in the ZBS—the Reach Block.

Rick Trickett has been coaching football since 1973. Over that time, he’s found that coaching the offensive line is his favorite area. Practicing in pads is essential to preparing for a season. But you can practice an entire day without pads as an offensive line and get a lot of valuable work done. Technique is essential, and it needs constant attention.

Trickett was the freshman coach and defensive coordinator at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1975. He then coached the defensive line for 2 years under head coach Frank Cignetti. Through that experience, Trickett saw that all young coaches should work on both sides of the ball. It gives a level of perspective that studying either alone cannot supply.

How Will The ZBS Benefit The 2015 Broncos? SOUND OFF IN THE FORUMS!

Coach Gary Tranquill was on the staff at the time. Trickett quickly learned that Tranquill had a fertile football mind. He started to learn the intricacies of the game from Gary. Among the things Trickett learned was that he preferred working with the attitude of the OL.

It’s a simple reality—if your OL doesn’t do their job, your team won’t be successful. Five players have to be on the same page, every play. Most OL players take enormous pride in this. They don’t often get recognition. Some people are fans for decades without knowing what a reach block is. That’s fine, too. Everyone should enjoy football at the level that suits them.

Primary among the four texts I used for this piece was Trickett’s ‘Complete Offensive Line’. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys ‘Football Outsiders’ Ben Muth, OL play in general or the OL’s role in the Broncos new scheme. The collected lectures from the C.O.O.L. clinics were invaluable. So were Alex Gibbs’ lectures.

Reach blocks have two essential functions. They are used on the front side of run plays. They’re also used to gain outside position on a defender. Having the blocker gaining outside position on the defender can effectively lock him out of the play. Successfully using it is all technique. That makes it effective for the often-lighter players of a full stretch zone blocking scheme. Combination blocks and cutoff blocks are also essential for this scheme.

Trickett learned the FSZB scheme from innovator Alex Gibbs while Trickett was at West Virginia. Since it comes from Gibbs through a top OL coach (as it did to Gary Kubiak), the information should match up with much of what the Broncos will be doing this year.

Defeating a reach block is something that coaches look for in defensive linemen. A drive block tends to go straight through the middle of the defender. At times, it’s used to push the defensive line defender back into the linebacker, who’s immediately behind him (in a ‘stack’ defense). The idea here isn’t to blow the defender off the line of scrimmage. This block is meant to get position on the defender

Technique

The blocker takes a step laterally at the snap. For example, if this step is made by the right guard, his right foot ‘reaches’ toward the sideline. The foot stays parallel to the line of scrimmage.

Two things need to happen, in order. First, just before the snap, the guard should already be taking a ‘mental’ step. The player should ‘see’ himself weighted to the right (in this case). It makes the step quicker.

There’s an easy illustration of this principle. Hold your arm out straight. Using your strength, have a person try to bend your arm. They’re usually successful. Now, hold the arm out straight and imagine it as a fire hose, with the water forcefully pouring from it. It’s nearly impossible to bend. Similarly, the blocker will move faster and more easily if he’s focusing on that mental step just prior to the snap.

As the blocker steps, his arms draw back, elbows to the rear, just as the step is made. Some coaches call that “cocking your guns”. The blocker’s shoulders are as close to parallel with the line of scrimmage as possible. The first step should land parallel with the defender’s outside foot.

The second and third steps are fast. The steps are these—first step slower, then the second and third go quick, quick. The first, or stretch step, is usually about eight inches lateral. The feet stay parallel. The second step is to the inside foot of the defender. The third step brings the feet parallel again. The points of contact, called the ‘fit’, are these:

  • The helmet should be at the defender’s outside number or into his outside breast.
  • The blocker’s outside hand goes to the defender’s outside armpit.
  • The blocker’s inside hand is at the inside numeral. If all three are done correctly, this will prevent the defender from making contact with the ball carrier.
  • The drive block is performed in a straight forward direction. The reach block is performed laterally. If the blocker uses the technique as described—anchors with his outside foot and hand and drives with his core musculature, he should be able to control the defender.

Any block in the FSZB scheme has to be finished well to be effective. The blocker may have to reconnect two or even three times to get fully in control of the defender. Once he is in control, he needs to take the defender where he wants to go.

Many defenders will see the reach block starting. To avoid being trapped, the defender might try to go outside. The blocker works to keep his outside leg and arm very strong, creating a solid base. In the FSZB, if the defender puts his power into getting outside, the blocker maintains his base and reverses his inside hand, driving the blocker farther outside. It takes the defender off-balance and puts him out of position. That leaves a hole for the ball carrier to sprint through.

    The Ball Carrier

The ball carrier would have to adjust his chosen lane to compensate. That’s why, in the FSZB, you don’t want ball carriers who explode out of their gap. You want ball carriers to explode INTO it, through it and out again, all at full speed. He has to trust his linemen. The nature of the FSZB scheme is to create lanes. They often last only a half second. That means the runner needs:

  • Vision—the ability find the gap opening, keeping their head up enough to adjust automatically if a blocker changes a defender’s positioning.
  • Trust—in the scheme, the coaches, his blockers and himself.
  • Willingness—to cut and go with all his power, from his 1st step through the lane.
  • A lot of running backs take the attitude that they’ve been doing this since playground ball. They think they know how to run for yardage. Such players are a waste of roster space in the FSZB. Other than hitting the QB in practice, there are few ways to get benched faster than to suggest that you already know how to carry the ball.

I feared that problem when Knowshon Moreno was drafted and saw those fears realized early in his career. He improved greatly his last two years in Denver. Neither C.J. Anderson or Montee Ball have concerns in this area.

The reach block is also useful when the defense is using a ‘Wide 7’ pass rusher. The tackle should employ the axiom ‘the wider the defender, the deeper the drop’. Because of the angle involved, the blocker will tend not to reach block the defender with his first step.

    More Broncos Stories

Instead, right tackle would take a step back with his outside foot. That opens his hips to the defender’s angle of attack. Whether pass or run blocking, the blocker then gets his ‘fit’ and anchors. When it’s done correctly the defender is in no position to get in on the play.

So, the keys to using the reach block in the FSZB system are these:

    1. Take a mental step in preparation for the snap.
    2. Step with the outside foot until it’s even with the defender’s outside foot.
    3. Take the third step so that the feet are even again.
    4. The helmet goes to the defender’s outside breast, low enough to prevent clanging helmets.
    5. The hands are ‘cocked’ at the stretch step. They fire out on the second and third steps.
    6. The outside hand goes to the defender’s outside armpit.
    7. The inside hand goes to the inside numeral.
    8. Obtain a solid base, then take the defender in the direction he thinks he wants to go. You’ll feel it though your hands and body, and can use the defender’s own drive to move him out of position.

    See you at the games.
