Denver Broncos Training Camp Notebook: Day 6

On day six of Broncos camp, a few guys got banged up and the team got some redzone work in. Join MHH Publisher Chad Jensen to find out the latest from Dove Valley.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—Peyton Manning and the other veterans returned to the practice field today for the fifth practice (sixth day) of training camp. It was a practice marked by physicality, which led to a few guys leaving early.

Virgil Green and Michael Schofield both left the field early but their injuries are not serious. Head coach Gary Kubiak spoke about the team being “nicked up” following practice.

“We had a few guys nicked up today,” Kubiak said. “[T Michael] Schofield left practice. His back is bothering him a little bit. [RB] Kapri [Bibbs] got an ankle. We’re at that stage. We have a lot of nicks—nothing that shouldn’t have everybody back out here Thursday. We had a couple guys still out from yesterday; [NT] Marvin [Austin, Jr.] and [OLB] Lerentee [McCray] were out today. You all saw that. Yeah, we’re nicked up, but it’s that part of camp.”

Kubiak is concerned that Austin’s injuries are going to make it more difficult for him to make the final roster. With such an extensive injury history, it’s definitely a concern.

“We have to get him [Austin] healthy,” Kubiak said. “Hopefully tomorrow’s break gives him a little bit more time—those type of things. We have to get him back on the field because, like I said, this is going to be a tough team to make for a lot of people. We have to give everybody a legitimate shot. He needs his reps like anybody else.”

Guys are acclimating to the wham-bam nature of training camp, after months of no hitting. Derek Wolfe was banged up today, but Kubiak said he’s “okay”. Malik Jackson continues to work with trainers on his calf strain. Cornerback Tevrin Brandon was absent practice for the second consecutive day with an arm injury. With the Broncos taking Wednesday off, Kubiak hopes to have everyone back on the practice field Thursday.

The Broncos got some redzone work in today. Kubiak wants to be dominant running the ball inside the 20-yard line, which will open up the passing attack and force defenses to honor both. To do that, the Broncos have to practice it, which means repetitions. Kubiak also liked the way all three quarterbacks (Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Zac Dysert) conducted themselves toward the end of the day when everyone was tired.

“The thing I was really pleased [with] at practice today was at the end of the day, when the team was dragging, the quarterbacks made plays,” he said. “All three of them made big plays. It’s what they have to do. That’s their job. That’s their responsibility.”

With a new focus on physicality, the Broncos are feeling a bit beat up. Tomorrow’s break comes at just the right time. But as the players wear down from the rigors of camp, Kubiak is using it as an opportunity to teach.

“Usually when you’ve had your pads on for about three days, that is probably about as bad as they’re going to feel all year long,” Kubiak said. “I told them today, it’s also probably the time you become your best as a player because you have to push through those things. You have to play with technique when you’re tired. It’s a gut check right now. They know it. They’re telling each other that. That’s a good thing.”

The Broncos have a two-man heat for what will likely be one fullback job—veteran James Casey and rookie Joe Don Duncan. Casey is no stranger to the competition of training camp, nor to playing the position. He has looked the part, but Kubiak has been impressed with the rookie.

“I’m impressed with [FB/TE] Joe [Don Duncan],” Kubiak said. “I can’t remember which scout went and found him, but that was a good find. He fits what we do. He’s athletic, he’s physical, he’s willing to hit and he’s going to be a good special teams player.”

Demaryius Thomas and Antonio Smith are still working toward full team participation. Smith received some team reps today. Both players are close to being able to join their teammates full-time. Kubiak talked about Thomas’ progression thus far.

”Today he went as long as he took to seven-on-seven periods and practiced probably for about an hour and 10 minutes,” he said. “He’ll come in for his treatment tomorrow and stay on his schedule. I’m hoping through the course of next week he’s pretty much ready to cut loose and go full with the guys.”

Second-year receiver Cody Latimer has continued to take advantage of his time with the first-team and had a spirited battle with fellow second-year corner Bradley Roby. The two youngsters traded making plays at the other’s expense today. The Broncos envision big things from Latimer this year.

The Broncos are giving Omar Bolden a shot at not only returning kicks, as he did late last season, but also punts. The team has only had one day of punt returns in the team setting thus far, but Bolden has been fielding punts after practice. Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillas is hopeful Bolden can master both, but sees the August 14th matchup with Seattle as a “tell-tale” sign for Bolden.

The diminutive Solomon Patton has continued to impress his coaches on special teams. On Sunday, Kubiak talked about Patton needing to also master all the receiver spots on offense, to truly cement himself a place on the roster. DeCamillas talked more in depth about Patton today.

“He’s [Patton] extremely quick and extremely fast,” DeCamillas said. “He’s a smaller guy, but he’s very decisive. For a guy that’s that size, he runs strong, which means he’s going to break some tackles when he gets there, which for most of those guys, doesn’t happen. We’re impressed with him so far. Hopefully he can continue.”

On the kicking competition between Connor Barth and Brandon McManus, DeCamillas categorized it as “a pretty close competition right now”. DeCamillas also stressed that for Barth, he better get his kickoff legs under him, because they don’t want to stress the roster by carrying four specialists. We’ll learn more about the kicking competition when the Broncos get to real preseason game situations.

In regards to the competition at the bottom of the quarterback depth chart—namely, Dysert and rookie Trevor Siemien, offensive coordinator Rick Dennision said today that he’s liked what he’s seen from the rookie physically thus far, but that it’ll be in the preseason games that the coaches will “make some decisions on them”.

The first-team defense allowed three touchdowns in redzone work toward the end of practice today. After practice, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips pointed out how well the Broncos did in total yards last season, but really wants them to tighten the ship in the redzone. He doesn’t want to allow as many points.

“There are a lot of things that we need to clean up,” Phillips said. “One of the things and one of our goals this year, the team last year certainly played well overall yardage-wise, but I think 22nd in scoring defense. It’s really imperative that we improve that area, especially in the red zone. We didn’t do great at the end there. They scored all three times, but this is the first day for us. We did some good things and got some interceptions down there, but we definitely need to emphasize to keep working on that.”

Phillips also talked about undersized defensive end Kenny Anunike, complimenting him on how well he performed without pads on and how key it was to see if he could hold up at the point of attack with pads on.

“To see him [Anunike] with pads on—because he really did well without pads—and not get blown out of there or knocked back, and be able to do some of the things he did without pads, is encouraging,” Phillips said.

With a secondary that features three Pro Bowlers and second-year former first round pick, Phillips has many arrows in his quiver that will allow him to scheme aggressively this year. He talked about his aspirations, not only for the secondary, but the defense as a whole.

“We have played a lot man in places where we have man corners and we’re going to be a pressure defense,” Phillips said. “If it’s pressure out of zone and zone blitzes or it’s pressure out of man and man blitzes, that is what you try to decide. It looks like we’re going to have a combination of it.”

The Broncos are off tomorrow, but will be back in full pads Thursday. Our very own Jake Marsing will be there to report on practice from the inside. Follow him on Twitter @JakeDMarsing, and keep it here with us at Mile High Huddle for all the latest Broncos camp news and analysis.
