ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—It's been a long road back into full team participation for Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan. The Denver Broncos leading tacklers for the last two seasons both underwent offseason surgery and have slowly been eased back into action at training camp.
Today, for the first time this year, both players participated fully in all facets of practice. The Broncos need their starting inside linebacker duo, if they hope to be dominant in defending the run again. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips took some time after practice to update Marshall and Trevathan's situation.
“Both inside backers practiced the whole practice today," Phillips said. "That's a good sign as far as where they are. I think [ILB] Brandon [Marshall] has practiced a little bit more than [OLB] Danny [Trevathan], but both of them are in a good situation as far as being ready to play when the season starts."
That's big news. The Broncos regular season is set to kickoff on September 13th, when they'll play host to the Balitmore Ravens at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Phillips' defense got off to a great start in Seattle this past weekend, notching seven sacks from seven different players, and two turnovers, while limiting the Seahawks to just 181 yards of total offense.
Next up, the Broncos will head to Gary Kubiak's old stomping grounds to take on the Houston Texans in Week 2 of the preseason. The Broncos locker room will be unified in wanting to exact a small measure of vengenance on behalf of Kubiak, whom the Texans fired in the middle of the 2013 season, after seven and half seasons as the head coach.
Kubiak led the Texans to the franchise's first division crown in 2011, as well as their first postseason berth and postseason victory, before Matt Schaub and company melted down. At this stage, it's unclear whether Marshall and Trevathan will play on Saturday in Houston, but if I were a bettin' man, I wouldn't count on it.
