Peyton Manning Is Still The Man

Peyton Manning wears his heart on his sleeve. And he cares about his fans.

We can debate endlessly on Peyton Manning the quarterback. Is he still a top-5 QB? Is he even a top-10 QB? Is he regressing? Let's not worry about that right now. Let's talk about Peyton Manning the man, not the football player.

Kari Barnett Bollig is a fan who loved Peyton Manning when he was a member of the Indianapolis Colts and continued  her love when he joined the Denver Broncos. Sadly Kari was informed by her doctors that she was dying from breast cancer. Bollig began writing letters to people, thanking them for contributing in her life, among the recipients was Peyton Manning.

“I have followed Peyton Manning forever, especially being an Indiana girl,” Bollig told the Indianapolis Star. “I just thought, ‘Well shoot. I’m going to write him a letter and tell him how much he inspires me, not just because he’s a football player, but for what he does off the field. It was very personal. It was very heartfelt and I never thought anything of it other than I wrote it and sent it. I didn’t even know he would get it.”

Manning is known for his personal touch with fans. He will hand write letters back to fans, a touch that aludes many mega stars in the NFL. For Kari, Manning did much more, flying Bollig and her husband to Denver, spending time with them over the weekend and getting them sideline passes for Sunday’sgame against the Ravens.

“It was real easy and laid back, not at all nerve wracking,” she said. “He’s welcoming. He’s like a gentle giant. It was such a personal moment. It was a once in a lifetime thing.”

In Denver and Indianapolis and all over the country, people have been treated to as classy of a guy there ever has been. Manning is a better person than he is a quarterback, which is saying something considering he is a first ballot Hall of Famer.
