Denver Broncos Outside Linebacker DeMarcus Ware Expected To Miss A Couple Of Weeks With Back Injury

DeMarcus Ware was sidelined with a back injury Sunday, and a recent report says he'll miss some time.

As the reigning AFC Defensive Player of the Month, DeMarcus Ware entered Week 5 as the NFL's leader in sacks. He has been a wreaker of havoc and a major contributor to the Denver Broncos defensive success.

On Sunday, with the Broncos in Oakland to take on the Raiders, Ware left the game in the first quarter with what was reported as a back injury. Initially classified as questionable, he was unable to return to the game.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post caught up with Ware after the game. Ware sounded positive about his prognosis.

"It just locked up on me. I came into the locker room, and I just couldn't get it to loosen up," Ware said. "But I don't think it's going to be anything that would keep me out."

It sounded like good news. But a recent report throws a wet blanket on it.

The Broncos defense didn't seem to miss a beat absent Ware, as rookie first round pick Shane Ray and Shaquil Barrett each notched a sack coming off the bench.

Wade Phillips's squad has been able to consistently pressure the quarterback. With 22 sacks as a team, they lead the NFL. Ware has accounted for 20 percent of them.

When talking about the Broncos roster, Doc Bear has continued to return to the term 'elite depth'. It's a powerful weapon to have in the aresenal when a Pro Bowler goes down, another player can step in and produce at the same level—or close to it.

We'll wait to get confirmation from the team, but Ware might miss the Broncos next game vs. the Cleveland Browns. The Broncos have their bye in Week 7, which could mean Ware is shooting for a return in Week 8.

Update: Head coach Gary Kubiak was hesitant to confirm Rapaport's report today. Sounds like we'll have to wait a little longer for absolute clarity.

“I don’t really have an update right now," Kubiak said. "It’s his back that’s bothering him and they’re checking him out. I’ll visit with [Head Athletic Trainer Steve] Greek [Antonopulos] when we leave here. I’ve been in meetings and just got through with the guys, so I’ll find out more this afternoon.”
