The NFL's top closer, John Elway, has spent the last couple of days wheeling and dealing. He's already executed a great-value trade with San Francisco that brought two-time Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos.
Grossi's report claims that although Thomas is most certainly on the block, the Browns are looking for more in return and wanted Elway to sweeten the pot by adding breakout linebacker Shaquil Barrett to the mix, if Elway wasn't willing to give up two No. 1's.
For now, the Broncos felt like that was asking too much. If Shane Ray was healthy, I think Elway makes that deal. However, with the 2015 first round pick out for the next several weeks with a sprained MCL, the Broncos need Barrett spelling Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.
Thomas is the best left tackle in the game. But, he's no spring chicken. He's never missed a game—true. But he's 30 years old. If I'm Elway, I'd make the deal. Send Barrett and trade Ryan Clady next year.
You've already invested in Shane Ray, who's shown promise early on as a rookie. And Lerentee McCray has played well, now that he's healthy. You have two of the premier pass rushers in the league in Miller and Ware.
The Broncos might be in win-now mode, but Elway's thinking long term, too. Best case scenario, Ware's here through 2016. Worst case, he's gone after this season. Having Barrett would mitigate that loss.
As we've seen with Elway over the years, anything's possible when it comes to making deals. The trade deadline is today at 2 p.m. MST.
UPDATE: No deal. Couldn't agree on compensation.
