Ware originally injured his back in Week 5 vs. the Oakland Raiders, which caused him to miss the next week in Cleveland, but the Broncos Week 7 bye came at an opportune time, giving him the rest he needed to get back on the field.
With 6.5 sacks on the season, Ware has played at an All-Pro level and even earned AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. But at 33 years old, injuries don't heal as quickly.
The Broncos are already without one of their sack specialists, Shane Ray, who's recovering from a sprained MCL. Von Miller and Shaquil Barrett will have to do the heavy lifting in Ware's absence. They've combined for 7.5 sacks and five forced fumbles on the season.
Lerentee McCray will spell Miller and Barrett in the coming weeks. Since recovering from his preseason injury, McCray has played well.
He's about to get a significant increase in playing time, as defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been very liberal in rotating players at outside linebacker to keep them fresh.
Ware's injury will likely force all three players onto the field more than they have been in the first half of the season.
