Denver Broncos left guard Evan Mathis is active for tonight’s show down with the undefeated New England Patriots, but will not start. In his place, rookie guard Max Garcia will get starting repetitions.
Mathis has battled an ankle injury all week that he suffered during the Broncos 17-15 win over the Chicago Bears. He was only able to practice towards the end of the week. Thus, Max Garcia has been given the majority of reps with the first team offense during game preparations this week.
Head coach Gary Kubiak discussed his opinion of Garcia during his last press availability of the week on Friday. “I have a lot of confidence in him,” Kubiak said. “I know he’s a first year player, but if you go back and remember Max was a starter towards the end of camp. Then, we got Evan and now Max has played a lot of football at various positions. This would be a tough assignment to draw his first start, but he’s been working really hard to do it and he’s had a good week of practice.”
Also inactive for the Broncos Sunday night is five time NFL MVP Peyton Manning. That is not a surprise. However, it had been unclear exactly where Manning would watch the game from. According to sources, and a report from KUSA’s Mike Klis, Manning will not be watching tonight’s game from the sideline.
Instead, Manning will watch the game from the press box. Kubiak had said at times throughout the week that Manning would watch the game from the coach’s box. However, according to Klis, that will not be happening because, as Klis said, “He’s not a coach.”
