Whatever the case, the Broncos acquired their quarterback of the future on Thursday night, when Memphis' Paxton Lynch began to plummet through the first round to within striking distance of John Elway.
The Broncos packaged a trade with Seattle to move up and take Lynch. Now with three quarterbacks on the roster — Lynch, Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian — some fans are left wondering what will happen with the Kaepernick pursuit. Sounds like a good thriller, "The Kaepernick Pursuit".
Elway answered that question quite bluntly in his post-draft presser Thursday night.
“Yeah, we’re probably over with Kaepernick," Elway said. "We’re thrilled that we could get Paxton and have Mark in here like we talked about before. We’re thrilled to get Mark with his experience and the way that he’s going to come in and compete for that job with Paxton and Trevor, and we’ll see what else we have.”
The Broncos have talked about rolling with just three signal-callers in training camp. They might stand pat and let it be a three-man race for the starting job.
"Whether we bring in three or even four—we’ve talked about just staying at three and throwing the ball out there and seeing who comes out with it," Elway said earlier this month in his pre-draft presser.
However it shakes out, nobody will be handed Denver's starting job.
