Shanahan's comments on Monday's practice

Coach Mike Shanahan comments on injuries to linebacker John Mobley and cornerback Lenny Walls as well as an update on the backup quarterback battle.

Comments from Head Coach Mike Shanahan on Monday's practice:

On linebacker John Mobley's injury:
"John Mobley being out of for a few days obviously hurts. But to get him back in practice; you know he is gonna be in football shape by the time he starts the regular season."

On John Mobley possibly playing this weekend:
"Well, right now if he is ready to go he is obviously going to play this weekend. Hopefully, there's no setback on his knee (no inflammation) where he can keep on practicing. But for him to be ready today is a good sign."

On an injury to cornerback Lenny Walls:
"A little hip injury. He's just a little sore. He probably could have practiced, but we thought it was best to for him to stay out."

On rookie George Foster's return:
"I saw him run a couple of plays; that's about it, but I really didn't get the chance to study him. Itís nice to get him in pads. I am sure he is anxious to get going. Hopefully, he will bounce right back and he's ready to go tomorrow."

On the team's performance in the preseason game against the Texans:
"I felt we had some great effort. Like most first games there were a lot of mistakes being made, but you go back and correct those things. You get the chance after the film to come back on the field as offense and defense and go over 20-30 things you did poorly. Everyone knows that if one piece of the puzzle is missing, you're going to give up some plays. The thing you can't get away from is effort and I felt good about that."

On quarterback Steve Beuelein not practicing a lot:
"Steve doesn't need the playing time like some of the younger guys, but Steve will have his opportunity."

On quarterback Jarious Jackson:
"Jarious is a natural leader and he is an extremely hard worker. He's got the ability to make big plays that a lot of quarterbacks can't make. I don't know whether it is his arm or his athletic ability. What he has to do is become more consistent. Once he gets that consistency down, then he has a chance to separate himself."

On Danny Kanell:
"Kanell came in and did some good things. He made a few third downs and a couple big third down throws. Also, he kept some drives going."

On whether the backup quarterback position has been decided:
"We are going to give these guys the chance to compete all the time. Once a guy out-performs someone consistently, then he has the chance to move-up the depth chart."

Injury list:
Daryl Gardner
Quentin Griffin
Kyle Johnson
Ephraim Salaam
Lenny Walls
John Mobley went down during practice, but was allowed to continue.
