Von Miller Declines Denver's Latest Offer For A Contract Extension

Denver's latest offer to Von Miller would make him a very rich man.

While the Denver Broncos were in Washington D.C. celebrating their Super Bowl 50 victory at the White House, star linebacker Von Miller sounded encouraged by the negotiations currently underway to get him a contract extension.

“We’ve made real progress over the last couple of days," Miller said. "I’m very optimistic about the whole thing. Yeah, I remain optimistic about everything.”

Although talks seem to be headed in the right direction, Denver's latest mega-offer to Miller wasn't quite good enough, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

$39.8 million in guarantees over the first two years is likely a big sticking point for Miller, who's stated recently he wants quarterback money—a contract that pays him north of $20 million.

The Broncos' most recent offer doesn't quite eclipse the $20M/year mark, but it would make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league, just beyond Ndomukong Suh's whopping $19,062,500 annual average.

9NEWS' Mike Klis weighed in with this:

Miller said during a White House press conference Monday that "real progress" had been made in contract negotiations in recent days. And the two sides did reach a partial agreement on the years and total  value of Miller’s proposed contract – six years worth a total value that slightly exceeded the $114.375 million Miami’s Ndamukong Suh ($19.06 million per year) received in 2015 to become the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.

Right now its about guaranteed money. Miller is likely looking for guarantees north of $60 million. Maybe he'd settle for slightly less than $20M-plus per year if the guaranteed money was right.

Miller was hit with the exclusive rights franchise tag in March, and the deadline to reach an extension is July 15. The news of Denver's latest offer leaves little doubt that the two sides will reach an accord in time.

John Elway has just got to nudge those guaranteed dollars up a smidge.
