Just yesterday, linebacker Von Miller appeared on a Netflix talk show, stating publicly that despite having the franchise tag applied to him, he wouldn't consider holding out and missing the entire 2016 season.
I observed then that Miller's admission was a poor negotiation tactic and it seems Miller's representatives would agree. Today, the Super Bowl 50 MVP reversed course, stating publicly via Instagram that there's "no chance" he plays under the franchise tag in 2016.
"I love my Teammates, Coaches, and My Fans" but there is "No Chance" I play the 2016 season under the Franchise tag."
Miller is in the process of doing a little damage control, with regard to the stare-down he and Denver Broncos GM John Elway are currently mired in. Miller wants $70 million guaranteed and a total contract value of $114.5M over six years.
Elway agrees with the term and value of what that contract would look like, but not the guaranteed money, it would seem. Miller has tried to let his natural love for his club and teammates lead the way in his public musings this offseason but its done him no favors in the negotiations with Elway.
Its curious that he put "No Chance" in quotes. Forgive the double-negative, but perhaps the subtext is that there's "No Chance" he doesn't play in 2016 under the franchise tag, if forced to.
Miller's camp must maintain the requisite posturing with Elway and the public. Maybe Miller isn't as complex a guy as his reps want to portray.
But right now, Miller has to think about himself. Of course he wants to be a Bronco. Yes, he doesn't want to miss out on the opportunity to defend a World Championship.
But the business side of being a pro, alas, comes first. The two camps have until July 15 to come to terms on an extension. Until then, get used to this type of rhetoric.
