Yesterday the news broke that the Denver Broncos would be without the services of their head coach on Thursday night when they travel to play the San Diego Chargers. They should, however, regain another key component in Gary Kubiak's absence; starting quarterback Trevor Siemian, who has not played since spraining his AC joint in the second quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Siemian expects to go for the Broncos in their first divisional game of the 2016 season.
"That really was the plan going into Sunday," Rapoport said. "Have Paxton Lynch, the first-round quarterback, start, give Trevor Siemian a couple extra days to heal for the Chargers on Thursday night, and then let Siemian go back out there -- deal with some pain, yes -- and of course he does have that separated non-throwing shoulder, which can be painful, but not debilitating as it comes to being able to throw. Plus, it will also give Siemian a full week to prepare for the Chargers whereas Paxton Lynch, the first-rounder, would have had just a truncated week of preparation. So it seems, unless something changes over the next couple days, that it will be Siemian back in as the starter for Denver."
Ultimately, the master plan makes a bit of sense. Along with Donald Stephenson and Virgil Green, the Broncos elected to hold Siemian out last week when, in all likelihood, he could have played in some capacity.
Without making too many assumptions, it appears that the rationale was that they really wanted all of their guys to be fully ready for the Chargers.
All games count and it's hard to see the Broncos beating the Falcons regardless of injuries, but divisional matchups are worth more than non-conference tilts.
Either way, count on seeing 13 in all orange on Thursday night.
Update: It has been widely reported Thursday that Trevor Siemian will start tonight.
