After the game, head coach Gary Kubiak gave his customary victory speech and handed out two game balls. One, to linebackers coach Reggie Herring, who took over play-calling duties after Phillips was taken to a Denver area hospital.
Two, to rookie punter Riley Dixon, whose 68-yard punt out of his own endzone helped pin Philip Rivers and the Chargers on their own 33-yard line with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter. The Broncos were protecting an eight-point lead.
Wade Phillips is back at Broncos headquarters coaching and game-planning for the Oakland Raiders.
